T he color suited him well as he dem anded th e holeshot in the first mota of th e 250 /0pen Expert class. Not fa r behind . however , was a Kawasak i teamma te in th e form of Kyle La nd ru m who had th e job of holding off Rick ey Glaser on his 1982 Yamaha . Glas er powered by Landrum on th e second lap of the nine- lap race and gassed it towa rds Conway . Meanwhile, Hunter Carothers, Scott Bucsanyi and Charlie Brown (on a borrowed '82 Maico) were dicing it out. By lap four Glaser was in first as Conway had lost some tim e picking himself up off th e track in a back section but stayed up in second trying to ward off Landrum's pass ing • attemp'ts. Conway wasn't too pleased in his second spot position and kept exerting himself till he grabbed firs t back away from Glaser on the fifth lap. La nd ru m started hounding Glaser as Ca ro thers was still in fou rth a nd W illie Phee had co me up on him in fif th. La ndru m slid by Glase r on the eighth lap as the white flag came out and stayed there for the fin ish as Gla ser made it ac ross the finish line with Caroth ers only two bik elengths behi nd him. Mot a two sta rted with Conway out front and Ch a rlie Brown out there with him . Conway soon pulled away fro m everyone a nd rem a ined u ntouched for the whole ra ce. Brown stayed in seco nd for a while as Lee Dubose. Carot he rs and Glaser ham mered at each other. La ndrum was back in eighth place a nd came up to sixt h by t he fourt h lap wh ile Ca rothers acquired Brown's place. Glaser layed it down in a righ t -ha nd sweepe r on the fift h lap as th e line- up now rea d Conway, Ca rothers , Landrum an d Brown. Lan drum overtook Carothers b~ taking a turn on the inside as Carothers went high , yet th e tables were immediately reversed as Carothers opened it up on a downhill a nd passed him at the top turn . By the seventh lap, Glaser was nowhere in sig ht , Dubose had gotten by Brown and Landrum put Carothers behind him till the end of the moto. Mike Ricket forced himself out front in mota one of the 250 /0pen Intermediate class . Clint Ward followed closel y as Bill Newkirk , Randy Hammond and David Thompson were the lineup behind. Ward skillfully attempted passes on Ricket who held him off a couple laps yet gave in by the third. Newkirk was closing in on second place Ricke r bu t overshot a sweeper
