~ ~ Sout"ern Californla.Arrlaona· Yamaha sponsored 550 Seca took an early lead and held it for the first three laps. Then Baker got by him and stayed on the gas to the checkers with Benedum hanging in there for a strong second place finish. In the 500cc GP class Steve Kopp surprised everybody with his RD4001 Slim Stephens, on the Tom Saittasponsored Honda, was thought to be a shoo·in in this race, but Steve had other ideas. When the green flag dropped Kopp surged into the lead and held it for seven laps! Stephens was s1ipstreaming him all the way, just waiting for a bobble, and when it came Slim took over the lead and the win. But what was expected to be a hohum parade to the finish line turned out to be one of the better races of the day thanks to the hard riding efforts of both of these ridersl The 600cc Production race was worth the price of admission all by iuelf1 When the flag dropped, "Krazy Ed" Malkiewicz (Wildlife Performance KZ500) put his drag racing experience to good use by taking the holeshot with another Arizona rider, Eugme Coward on his Street Machinessponsored 550 Honda, in hot pursuit! Baker, recovering from a poor start, put on a charge and passed both of the early leaders by the end of the first lap. Coward spent the second lap thinking that over, and decided he didn't like it, so he repassed Baker on the third lap. In the fourth lap things stayed pretty much the same, but on the futh lap Baker got tired of being in second place and passed Coward back. Meanwhile "Mr. Clean," Henry Tecza (GPz 550), moved up to challenge Coward for the number two slot, and these two went by the pit area side by side with Benedum just a tick behind them! This pretty much established the order of things to come for the remaining five laps, with the first five riders close enough to each other to almost be covered by a single blanket. Across the finish line it was Baker, Tecza, Coward, Benedum and Malkiewicz. The combined 750cc and Open Production class gave Baker his third win of the day in the 7505, with Tecza and Bob Betke (KZ750) battling it out for second. Tecza got the nod and Betke had to settle for third. In the Opens Lance Owens on his Wildlife Performance KZlOOO took first with Harry Mixie from Reno placing second on a 900 Kaw. When the Open Super Street gridded up, everybody was paying clost! attention because this was the flI'St race here in which John Parisena from Reno was running his Turbo KZ10001 Off the line Baker took the lead, but as soon as the big Kaw came on the boost Parisena flashed by Baker in a demonstration of raw horsepower! Baker's game plan was to try and catch Parisena in the slower infield section and try to offset the horsepower advantage of the big Turbo with the quicker handling of the smaller Seca~ It was a valiant attempt, but Parisena just couldn't be headed1 The finishing order was Parisena, Baker, Stephens and Owens. In the Open GP class it was Stephens tum to play "David" to Parisena's "Goliath." Stephens, on his Kawasaki West sponsored KZIOOO, came out of the hole quicker than Parisena, but once the big Turbo started to moan that advantage was quickly 100t. Stephens spent the rest' of the race trying to ride in deeper and come out harder than Parisena, but Parilena wun't giving anything awayl At the finilh line it wa Parisena, Stepbena, Owens and Mixie. • T CN CXl 0') ...... ~ C(") ...... ~ ~ ::s I:: ...., ~ l~KETS n Straat & Touring Jack.es: Superb ~nlhlp of 1C1l1'l1t unapIIt waft esnnacI cowhIda.
