Hopwood quickly moved to second at the end of the first lap and began a series of five laps that were unbelievable as the two Suzultis seemed glued together with first one then the other rider gaining a halflength advantage. Finally on the last lap, Hopwood was able to edge ahead for the two· for· two win. The l25cc Intermediates saw s.:-me new faces in victory circle as Keith Craig scored a come·from·behind victory in the Stocks, and Bobby Voorhees did likewise in the Modifieds. Voorhees' win was his first of the year at Barona, and it looks like the Barona veteran is back in form again after a year layoff. In the l25cc Novices, Jimmy Palmer came back to Barona and put a stop to Rich Schulenberg's win streak with an . easy two·for· two win effort in the Stocks. Palmer looked to be ready to do likewise in the Modifieds after an easy first moto win, but in the second go 'round, Schulenberg got off in front and held on for a slim tie·breaker win. LIt.,e. lit.. 0 . - . co.,. 64· . ,--(303)137·.17 ~ while Baja vehicles, many that defied description, charged around a course five feet away in a Baja·cross, their finals for the season. Out of chaos came some spectacular races, notably, the Vets. In a classic duel between Dan Moore and Bob Hayes, both Senior racers and both Maico-mounted, this "Unholy Duo" took the track by storm and, drove their fans into a frenzy by clashing handlebars and scraping wheels high over the jumps and deep into every berm. As the first moto wound to a close, Moore, who had been in charge of the situation, found himself saddled with mechanical problems. Nevertheless, he remained on the course, esta· blished in second as Hayes led the group acl'OlS the line. A rough first moto for Bob Crosta, the lone Suzuki rider for the Seniors, forced him to DNF. When the men blasted out of the gate for their second round, Hayes grabbed the holeshot. Moore, in second, got a bit squirrelly in the hairpin after the start but got his act together and was breathing fire down Hayes' jersey. Both Hayes and Moore left the field behind with Hayes becoming airborne off the jumps, trying to shake Moore off his tail. Moore was cagey, biding his time and knocking on Hayes' back door. In a split second, Moore saw an opening and slipped through for the moto, as wen as the overall win. Hayes came home a respectable second for secondplace gold and third overall honors went to Crosta. For Dennis Hulen and his Yamaha, , it was a day to remember, Riding for only two years and new to the Pro ranks, Hulen set out to wallop the l25cc Pros and snatch back·to·back wins for himself, his dad and his whole family, for that matter, who have cheered him from the beginning. Hulen started the day by leading the pack out of the gate and onto the gnarly track. With Oakland Yamaha racer Chris Plain riding shotgun, Vaun Butler in third, Tim Murphy fourth behind the lone Suzuki racer, the action was heavy! Mter a do-or-die duel with Butler for command, Hulen held on and led the way back to the pits. Paul Thede aced out hoth Plain and Butler for second and closing fast in third was Plain. When the racers met on the grid for their second round, Butler was out for revenge and grabbed the lead away from Hulen. With Thede smoking in third, the pressure was relentless. Hulen made his move, and slipping a wheel under Butler, he took charge of the pack and held tight down to the wire, Thede gathered up second-place loot, and emerging with third overall honors was Butler.
