The California Racing Club tricked and treated its members to an
International Track run backwards the day after Halloween.
For the spectaton, it was a day to remember, with such lummaries as J;)onnie Hansen, Johnny O'Mara and Mark
Gambetta stealing the show.
Team Honda rider Donnie Hansen
opened the show with a brilliant pair
of wins in the 250cc Pros. When the
machines blasted off the line for their
fIrst moto, Hansen grabbed the holeshot with Jim Holley's Yamaha right
on his tail and Yamaha Support racer
John Whelchel hounding Holley. A
duel set up for fourth between Jon
Ortner, Larry Baker and Jim Coffey
that had to be seen to be believed. Erin
Buskirk wasn't about to be left out and
soon closed ranks on Coffey and then
was engaged in a wheel clashing duel
. with Ortner.
Hansen and his red hot Honda proceeded to' blow the entire fIeld in the
weeds and left behind him a classic
duel for second between Holley and
Whelchel that carried the two racers
wheel to wheel over every inch of the
track. However, Holley went down in
the sandwash, giving Whelchel the
chance he'd waited for to slip on by.
Holley remounted and managed to
close in tight on Whelchel by moto's
end. Coffey held off a tight fIeld for
fourth and Ortner rounded out the top
fIve.
When the machines came to life for
their second 'and final encounter, it
was Hansen and Russ Wageman (a
fInt moto DNF) in a side-by-side fIght
for command. Hansen emerged the
leader and found Holley and Whelchel
close behind for yet another handlebar
clashing go at it. Hansen didn't have
the clearance that the fint moto gave
him and Holley, feeling intense pressure
from Whelchel, 'was now within three
bikelen~hs of Hansen. The top three
had theIT hands full working their way
through lapped traffic, and emerging
at the fInish line for the overall victory
was Hansen. Holley took home second
place loot with a !I-2 ride Bnd third
place money went to Whelchel.
When the I25cc Pros gathered on
the starting grid, American Honda
colors were flying once more with John·
ny O'Mara taking the track by storm
and capturing both moto wins. In the
fIrst moto O'Mara flew off the line for
the lead, followed in hot pur, suit by
Russ Wageman, riding for Canoga
Park Suzuki, and Jack Greenberg, out
of the same shop. By the end of the
first lap O'Mara was pulling away into
a respectable lead. The battle for third
was incredible, all wheel to wheel
between eight racers. Greenberg finally
made his move and broke away from
die screaming banshees that replaced
normally sane motocross racers.
Greenberg was narrowing Wageman's
lead until Wageman unexpectedly
dropped his bike and was forced off
the track. At the finish, O'Mara was so
far out in from he couldn't even spot
his nearest competitor. Greenberg finished second, holding Gary Bowman
to third.
The second round was a rematch on
the start with O'Mara blasting out of
the gate, followed by Wageman and
Greenberg, the latter fIghting. to hold
back Rob Peeples and Bruce Maynor.
Bowman soon moved up to' fourth and
was locked into a wheel-to-wheel duel
with Greenberg. Bownian was definitely
on the gas, moving by Greenberg and
setting out to catch Wageman. With
positions changing throughout the
pack, the action was intense. When
the checkered flag waved an end to the
madness, O'Mara led the fIeld home
for a beautiful pair of wins; Bowman,
wi th a !I-2 ride, took borne second
place loot; and Greenberg, with the
finest ride of his career, scooped up
the third place gold.
