Benavidez
bombards the
competition at
SSM
By Terry Whytal
ORANGE, CA, OCT. !II
Can-Am factory rider Juan
Benavidez topped the 250cc Pro
class at this Saddleback Saturday
Motocross race. Benavidez had
18
to overcome bad luck, lapped riders
and tough competition from Team
Green's Billy Liles, Honda's Ron
Turner and Yamaha rider Jeff Hicks.
Suzuki support rider Clint Hardick
headed the field at the checkljrs in the
first mota. Hardick used the superior
power of the new water-cooled 250cc
Floater to good advantage as he swept
past all challengers and held a
commanding lead at mota's end.
Meanwhile, Hicks, Turner and
Benavidez engaged in a duel over the
runner-up slot with Suzuki rider Matt
Tedder holding down fifth place.
Benavidez took a rumble on the tricky
stadium whoops but charged back to
finish third behind Hicks with Turner
settling for fourth.
Liles finished a distant sixth in
round one but when the gate dropped
for the second mota the young rider'
from Georgia moved into the front
running pack of Hardick, Benavidez,
Turner and Hicks. When Hardick
broke his chain Liles took over the lead
and began pulling away from the
Saddleback regulars.
Benavidez broke clear from the
second place battle and reeled in Liles
only to slide off the groove and drop
back 15 seconds. A lapped rider nearly
knocked down Benavidez and Turner
flashed past into second. Two laps
later Benavidez regained the number
two position and began charging after
Liles.
Both riders turned the wick up
another notch and lowered the laps
times another couple of seconds. With
two laps remaining Benavidez closed
on Liles' rear wheel but Liles kept on
the gas and Benavidez could find no
way past. Liles' 6-1 score gave him
third overall honors while Benavidez
went home with the big share of the
purse money. Hicks -claimed second
place via a 2·4 score, with Turner
finishing fourth and Tedder rounding
out the top five.

Expert classes, respectively. Blake,
with blazing start to fmish wins, had it
a little easier than did Manning, who
was pressed by Dennis Vetter (winner
of the first moto) and Dave Pettigrew.
However his 2·1 finishes gave him the
overall win. Intermediate Mark Clark
rode with reckless abandon and stayed
with the Expert leaders all the way for
a third overall, first in class finish.
In the 125cc Expert race, Randy
Yetto developed a liking to the turn at
the bottom of the big hill. In both
motos he decided to dismount there
for a better look at the ground. He did
continue chasing Blake around the
cball~ng course to take second
away from Gary Dircks, who also
made a premature dismount.
Hesperia's Steve Valenzuela, in a
Victorville Suzuki Jersey, may not
pitch as good as that other guy with
same last name, but he showed some
ability as a MX rider. Working his way
from the back of the pack in both
motos he took a first and a second to'
win the 125cc Intermediate race which
was hotly contested by several boys in
both motos. Tony Biener finished
second with "Hard Luck" Nick Young
taking third. Jake Roach led wire to
wire in moto two, but a nasty spill in
the first moto kept him to a final
fourth.

GARDENA, CA, NOV. 5
The sprint car show took the'
place of tbe regularly scheduled
Contientnal Moto"sports Club's
motocross race the previous
week, but racing resumed tonight with a
few new competitors.
Rob Trone came out to Ascot and
smoked the entire pack of 125cc JUnior
division two racers. T&O Yamaha
rider Trey McFarland came closest to
Trone in the flI'St mota action and
Mark Jablonski was third. Trone fared
the best in the fmal mota and this time
Jo~ Bush advanced to the second
place position and McFarland placed
third. Two first place wins gave Trone
the clean victory as McFarland's 2-!l.
earned him the second place trophy
over Bush's 4·2.
Kawasaki-mounted Ron Bunn clobbered the 250cc Junior class both
motos. Shawn Tracy beat everyone except Bunn and took a pair of seconds
for that position overall. Joe Hauser
hooked a pair of third for that position
overall.

GIbson takes two
at CRe Saddleback
By Tom Corley
ORANGE, CA, NOV. 8
The California Racing Club gave
riders in So Cal one last chance to
qualify for the San Diego Amateur 'Supercross Championships
and hundreds took advantage, making
for an eventful day of racing at Saddleback.
Everyone is impressed by the pace
that the top Mini Expert riders set.
The contest was between CRF's Larry
Brooks and Bruce Bunch. Brooks was
mounted on a new 1982 Yamaha watercooled YZ 80. Bunch has a R&D Racing Engines' Suzuki and he was right
after Brooks, the entire race and nobody ran away with the race. Two
firsts added up to the overall victory
for Brooks. A pair of ,seconds gave
Bunch second. Kurt Hendriq.sen lost
the first moto to Mike Healey, but in
the second mota Healey pulled off the
track with problems and Hendricksen
took third.
Team Honda's Jim Gibson cleaned
up in both of the 125 and 250cc Pro
classes as expected. His toughest competition came from Scott Johnson who
was wearing his new Club Weekenders
jersey. Johnson went against Gibson in
the 250cc Pro race and led him in the
final mota. Finally Johnson made a
mistake when he overshot a berm and
Gibson flew on by. Johnson placed second in the 250cc Pro race but he took
the first place cash in the 500cc Pro
class with the victory over Bob Schulz
and Mickey Dymond.
