Little took over and it was his from that point on. Rosenberg gave him a good run and finished flTSt Open aad second overall. Little has cbal~ f1m 250cc many times but this waa bis first, and well earned, overaJl win. ''Wierd'' Harold Soens claimed fim 200cc and was the only 200cc bike not lapped by Little whose fastest time was SIX minutes and 50 seconds. The Mini race lead turned over several times but was eventually won . by Dale's Modem Cycle rider Shannon Shamblin. John Ray (Yam) took the holeshot with Bellflower Yamaha's Dave Trager in hot pursuit. Trager passed Ray as they hit the desert section and picked up a tremendous lead before taking a hard get off. Shamblin had gone. down in the motocross ·section, yet by the end of the first lap he had the lead while Trager was working his way back up. Shamblin went on for the win which earned him enough points f01 the number one 'plate which he'll sport next year. Trager, who took second. held this coveted plate in 1980. Rustan's Mark Heth took the overall in the 200cc race, followed by East· West's Kevin Case, but the real race was between Dan Miller, Rob Hall and Jake Roach for third place. His 250lT Yamaha took the lead on the first lap and left the battle for second plac~ between Craig Adams (C·A) and Jeff Harmon (Suz). GARDENA, CA; NOV. I One of the mOlt popular riders this year is "Sizzlin' Six," or better known ha.aIes. LIghtweIghts' D-37 Ascot TT By Dan Mahony Well over 100 riders turned out for the seco~d half of the Lightweights' double-header Sunday night. The track was a little worse for wear after the Pro race on it under the bot afternoon sun, but the racers made the mOlt of it. Races ran off smoochly aDd with a minimum of Little Curtis Cannon emerged as the night'S only double winner, with firsts in the 125cc Combo and the 250cc Expert. Mike Kirby has to get the trophy for lasting the longest, however. as he won the 80cc class, took a third in the 250cc Expert (after besting Curtis in .the heat race), and then came back for a fifth in the 500cc Expert go. Curtis' older brother (how does it feel, Chris?) Chris Cannon. won that 500cc class with a last·SO-feet pass of race long leader Rocky Robinson. Come from be~d must be what they teach the kids in the Cannon household, as Curtis did it to Brent Bowers in the 12Scc class, then again to Jay Lewis in the 2SOC<= Expert final. Bowers also had to settle for second behind Kirby in the 80cc division. The sidehacks, though few in numbel, made an appearance. with the low·slung machine of Loreto Masella/ Jim Hanneman powering around ·the desert·type setups of Bob Hicks/Mike Bums and the Jordan boys. Dale and Kenneth. They were nuts, as usual, with sprint car-type slides into tum one, some two-wheeling, and even some one-rideringl A desert class was included for the puckerbush types, which easily fell to Erwin Ritter, who has a bit more track time in than most of the others. Shamrocks' Thomas Willis scored a second place over Roger Zela. Those guys and the hacks are both something else; knobby tires pumped up to SO pounds, legs swinging, Huskys everywhere. By contrast, the Seniors were fairly sedate: Jay Lewis, who isn't a Senior by very much. held off Larry Bird's Triumph for the trophy as Bill Bartels rounded out the top three. Results so COMB: 1. SO Suzuki-mounted Chris Heinrich completely dominated Corona Raceway's 125cc Intermediate class after posting a perfect 1-1 .score. Heinrich led every lap of both motos for. the convincing win. The Suzuki pilot's closest competition came from Yamaha mounted Mark Decker' who finished behind Heinrich with two consecutive seconds. Third place went to Pat Bums (Yam). One of the more exciting races of the night was produced by the 250cc Intermediates. At the start of the first mota Yamaha {:,f Pomona's Jack Scott charged into the lead with fellow Yamaha of Pomona rider Jim Vermil· lion, Honda rider Pat sdireffler and Yamaha·mounted Rusty Taffulger trail· ing. Scott began to stretch his lead within a few laps but Vermillion never let up, keeping Scott within his sights. But the battle for third was brewing between Schreffler and Taflinger as the two were side by side at times. The duel ended early when Schreffler dropped out, handinK the third spot to Tat'iinger. Up front the two leaders remained the same, neither gaining any advantage over the other. At the f1nish it was Scott who crossed the finish line first with Vermillion and Taflinger following. At the start of mota two it was Vermillion who got out of the gate first. pursued by Taflinger and Scott. But by the second lap Taflinger had muck around Vermillion for the lead.
