DenIs destroys NMA/Suzukl MX at the Dunes Yamaha has Todd Campbell and Larry Brooks mounted on their machines, Kawasaki is using Sam Storer and new Team Green rider Paul Denis. In the third event of the NMA/Suzuki Fall Nationals held at Indian Dunes, Denis fought the yellow machines and prevailed with major wins in the 80cc Modified Expert 12 + race as well as the 105cc contest. Grand National Champion Larry Brooks didn't let Denis take all as he took top hon~rs in the 80cc Stock Expen 12 + event. Bobby Moore claimed the first moto of the Stoclr. class edging out Brooks and Team Green's William Surratt. Brooks came baclr. stronger in the final moto to take the win ahead of Moore and Todd Campbell. Racing is full of close calls and tight situations. 1£ the rough track doesn't throw you off the machine, there is always the chance that somebody will crash in front of you. A sit.uation occurred in the Modified contest that changed the outcome of the race. Todd Campbell took his DG·tuned Yamaha to the first moto win ahead of Paul Denis and Bobby Moore. Campbell was going for it in the final moto and got the holeshot which is what is necessary to win against his competition. Unfonunately, Campbell was buclr.ed off of his bike in the second tum while going downhill. He was right in sight of the other riders, . but they couldn't avoid him and Moore clipped him. Brooks had a poor first moto finish but came baclr. and led this race ahead of Bruce Bunch, who is the fastest Suzuki contestant, and Denis. Campbell fired up his bike and continued with the attitude that he was going to win the race and placed with a fine founh. Though he didn't take a single moto win, Denis took the overall with a 2-5 tally. Campbell still took second overall. Bunch landed third overall and he is capable of bruising the Yamaha and Kawasaki riders. By Tom Corley Results VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 25 PEE WEE STK: 1. NOV. 1 Although it was a beautiful day to go racing, rider participation at DeAnza Cycle Park seemed to be at a slight luU. However, the stiff competition more than made up for the laclr. of attendance. Usually the 1l!5cc Beginner class has the most entries each week and this race was DO exception. When the gate dropped for the first ~oto John Downey (Yam) headed the pack IDtO the first tum with Frank Prouty (Yam) and Trini Camarena (Suz) hot on his tracks. But Downey's advantage was short·lived before Prouty zapped the leader on the second lap. A few turns later a battle over second developed between Downey and Camarena. Downey maintained his slight distance over the Suzuki pilot throughout much of tbe race but Camarena made his move with only two laps remaining. Meanwhile, Prouty went on to take the checkered flag first while Camarena took second and Downey third. At the stan of moto two it was Prouty who again grabbed the holeshot followed by Darren Paley, Downey and Camarena. Prouty managed to hold on to his lead for a few laps until Paley snuclr. past on the founh lap. A few laps later Camarena began to make his move by taking over the third spot after Downey went down. Camarena continued his drive, challenging Prouty for second. For the next three laps Prouty could see the Suzuki rider's front wheel in each tum. But Prouty kept his cool by holding back Camarena until the checlr.ered flag emerged. Paley easily won the moto but a first moto DNF ruined his chances to score. Prouty took the overall win with his 1-2 tally while Camarena's 2-5 totai earned a second. Downey finished third. Results PEE WEES: 1. .)elf Know (Suzl; 2. Oevid Ochoo 1Suzl. JR CVCLES: 1. Hollenbeck tops D-3BWlld WIzard Chase By Loretta Pipkin SUPERSTITION MTN., CA, OCT. 25 Husky-mounted Randy HoUenbeck cruised in for the overall win in .the Tank Slappers M.C. D-38 Wild Wizard Chase. Wild it was; 90 miles divided into two loops - aCI'Oll the dry laIr.e bed, down the sand dam, under the railroad trestle, through the pucker bushes and home. Open Amateur Justin Brady, riding just his third desen race, led the first loop with Craig Corda 50 seconds behind. Though the course was well marked, quite a few took the wrong turn before the flJ'St trestle, including Hollenheclr.. "I must have lost about a minute before I got back to the trestle, " said Hollenheclr.. Torsten Corum on his plucky 125cc was third and Hollenbeclr. fouM at home checlr.. Out on the second loop Brady and Corum led somewhere in the dust. Craig Corda was a healthy third till he did a spread eagle over the bars, allowing Hollenbeck, Dale Stevenson and Cla.ude Maynard to catch him. They all diced to the trestle with Hollenbeclt going through flJ'St. Bill Reams and son Scott won the Halloween costume contest dressed like leather covered bumble bees' wings and all, but that's where Bill's luclr. ended. On the fint loop he blew a head gasket, returned to the pits and got another bike DOt knowing his buddy had loaned the axle nut to someone else. The pack buzzed on and . Reams' wings were cJip~ for the day. Another Vet rider was running ninth overall on the first loop, but in the second broke the tabs on the seat. Kirk Kontiles lost the whole thing and still ftnished the race; however he will be sitting very carefully the next week or so. Five miles from' the finish Hollenbeck took the lead. Corum, pushing the l25cc, hung in for second. Stevenson moved up to third. Corda succumbed to a flat tire and empty gas tank and stood by the trail until Brady, running founh, stopped and picked him upl Riding double, Brady ftnished seventh overall. First Vet Claude Maynard, duking it out with Reams for the Vets point lead, didn't know if Reams was coming or not. Maynard was smokin' his new pet Husky (Harden's old factory bike) and finished first in class and founh over· all. In the MIni classes Tony Ribley and Steve Basin brought home the gold in their classes. Unofficial results OVERALl: 1. Rondy 1 _ _ (Hull; 2. T...-. Carum IHUS); 3. Dele S.-.on (Yom); 4.
