1981
For the last three years, when it came time for
Cycle Newstwest readers to pick their Rider
of the Year, each time they overwhelmingly
voted for land use activist Louis Henry
McKey, the Phantom Duck of the Desert.
McKey outpolled the likes of three-time World
Road Racing Champ Kenny Roberts, National
MX and Supercross champs such as Bob
Hannah, Kent Howerton,- Broc Glover, Danny
laPorte and Chuck Sun, top dirt trackers and
road racers like Steve Eklund and Wes
Cooley, or anybody else you can think of. And
he's done it handily. Will 1981 be different? Will the astounding
success of Bruce Penhall, who -in 1981 won
the World Individual Speedway Championship,
the World Pairs Speedway Championship, the
U.S. National Speedway Championship and
the California State Speedway Championship,
push him to the top of the balloting? How
about the banner year enjoyed by road racer
Eddie Lawson and motocrosser Broc Glover,
each of whom won two championships in
1981 !
Here are the rules for the 1981 Cycle
Newstwest Rider of the Year contest. Any
rider i's eligible as long as they live in the
Cycle Newstwest circulation area, the
boundary of which is the eastern borders of
Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South
Dakota and North Dakota. This ballot will be
printed only once, and no facsimilies will be.
accepted. All ballots must be postmarked on
or before Dec. 4. Results will be announced in
our big year-end issue!
