Front wheellendings were common throughout the course. Competition in the Three-Wheel d8aa W88 tight the whole dey. No rust on the Iron HorseGP By The COyote Photos by Petty Delong SHELTON, WA,OCT.4 Saturday morning riders started to arrive, some coming from British Columbia, Canada, Idaho and Oregon. No vehicles were allowed to ride the track prior to the event but many participants walked it. The course started inside a fairground on a 'd . 150 foot WI e start area w~ch funneled down to a 40 foot WIde tum one, then over a six foot high 8 jump and funneled down to a 20 foot wide one·quaner mile scrambles track. Out a big gate to the wild, off· camber hillsides, open fields, throuRh the woods and din roads. Much of the course was 50 feet wide. Even the tight stuff was 20 feet wide. Four miles of this and back into the fairgrounds via another gate and you ended up on a clay TT course. This area is set up with a track exit into a working pit area, Indy style, with lou of room for pit crews with gas cans, air bottles, spare wheels. Thanks to Hinshaw Honda and Countryside Honda there was no lack of spare pans available at the race. Sunday morning the sun was out and over 100 panicipanu stood in the s~on, track .infield !Utening to. the nder s . m~g, . while l.ate a~~ were stlll Slgnmg m. Now if you live In a place like Los Angeles County these numbers may sound thin, but keep in mind Washington was still "rodin' around the clock" when the Beatles launched the Yellow Submarine. The race staned at 10 a.m., one hour and one lap later it ended. First into tum one was Jerry Turner on a 440 Kawasaki powered Challenger unit. Unfonunately Turner would be one of eight not to finish the race, as usual a two-bit bolt brought the magna·buck. machine to a stop. Seven minutes and 40 1CC0nds later Mike Hawkings in a well set-up stock.- class Odyssey crOllled the finish line on his first lap. Several driven were bringing the race to Hawkings. Charging hard in lCCond place was the home built IRS unit of Cory Carmichael dicing it out with Chris Dickson's super modified. Ultimately the race ended with Hawkings winuiDg Stock. class and overall, Carmichael winning Modified aod Ted Walten winuiDg Super Modified. The lCCond race was Youth and Powder Puff. a 50·minute plus one lap bash with Dave Turner and Ron Bestwick. putting on an unbelievable dice for the full SO·minutes. The youngest rider on the course was Dustin DeLong who came up with a strong finish in the third spot. Turner drove it home first with Bestwick clOle behind. Brenda Felu proved to be the gal to beat in the Powder Puff clala. Next up, Three- Wheeler Senion. What a bunch of 250R's. Three prevalent names of nonhwest racen were laced into the 40 stanen on the line. Rob Ohge, a rider who often blows them away in Oregon on a well - modified 250R, Clete Hagan on a home built 560 twin four-stroke Honda and Rick Brehm on the DeLong sponsored 250R. Brehm had the overall win at the Spring Coyote Grand Prix on an old 185. He's 18 years old and as Ohge well put it after the race, "He's a super star." Hagan roared off the line to make believen out of eYetyOne that his twin had horsepower, only to cook a coil a shon time later. Rick was doing some cooking on his own - seven minutes, 20 second lap times with Ohge not far behind. Richard Maestas on a 185 was staying right up in the pack but the real mind blower was to see Roben Maestas on his peanut size 70 running right with the 2505. Of coune you have to undel:Stand it's a 185cc Suzuki powered. Brehm went on to take the overall win, Ohge second. Maestas won the under 200cc with Richard Maestas lCCond; the only two under 200cc not to be lapped by Brehm. Jeff wilson won the 0·126cc clala. The final event was Three·Wheeler Youth and Powder Puff. The Powder Puff winner was Pam Broob. Youth winner was Chris Ryser. The gals and youngsten put on a good race and with one lap to go the rain returned. Everyone got wet but the main question asked at the end of the day, "when is the nat race?"
