Northern california-Northern Nevada-oregon-Washington'ldaho-Utah-Alask -VlElNTU lR1A NORTHERN DATELINE Weather and radng hot at MecIforei MX By Delbert Long"rake MEDFORD, OR, OCT. 25 Mark Matheisen claimed the overall in the Pro class at the second race of the Medford motocross season. Mark followed I Larry Hooper to the flag in the first moto then took advantage of HooPer's second flat tire of the day in moto two, placing fint and thereby clinching the overall. This rime of year in Oregon, track promoten don't know whether to rent a water truck to put water on the track, or a pump to get water off the track. At the Medford motocross, the water truck would definitely have been the correct choice as the temperatures rose to nearly SO degrees, and the track turned hard, dry, and dusty. Eighty·six riden came out to do battle on the southern Oregon track with about 10% of those being Pros. Three 125s, and four 250cc Pros and one Open Pro showed up to race for the 150% payback. These same riden decided that they an wanted to race for one total purse by combining .all the classes into one moto. Then Malco West rider, Larry Hooper, decided it would be fun to race 4O-minute motos instead of the usual 20 or 50. After some friendly penuasion, all agreed and when the gate fen, H~per was away in fint. The Open Pro nder, Randy Peanon, was in second ~th 250cc riden Mattheisen and Ray Pnce in third and fourth. Mattheisen and Price both pulled by Peanon on laps two and three, respectively. By this rime, Hooper had already taken control of the moto and, ellen with a flat rear tire, easily took fint. Mattheisen was assured of a secondplace finish when Price.stalled his Maico in a hairpin tum. Sull, Ray was able to restart and finish third just· ahead of the Open rider, Peanon. Because of the time factor, the second moto was cut to 20 minutes. Things got tight' right after the gate fen when Hooper, Randy Amos and Scott Donnin were all forced into each other. Hooper got clear, but Amos wound up with his foot between Dormin's rear tire and fender. The result of this was a "knobby rash" on Amos' backside. Even though Hooper was clear of the incident, he stopped to see that everyone was alright before restarting in last place. By the end of the second lap, Hooper was in third behind Mattheisen and Price. But then, a large nail found its ~ay into .Hoopen tire, and Larry expenenced his second flat of the day, putting him out of the moto. Mattheisen and Price battled for several laps before Price went every which way but upright on a rough straight. Matth~ went on f~r the win after that. Price gathered himself up and got everything going in ~me dir~tion, placing second. ~nce, explaining his get-off, stated WIth a smile, "I never left my bike, but I've never been in a position like that." Dennis Pool placed third. Results PRo: 1. MerIt _ (Yom); 2. Ray Price IMail; 3. Dennie PooIlSuzl. CERTRIfUGAL CLUTCH: 1. Clwle Ran.d ISuzl; 2. Ben KIn; (Suzl; 3. ShMn Hivhllo Id (Suzl. PEE WEE: 1. THOUSANDS OF USED" NEWPARTS AND ACCESSORIES ON SALEI Manzonl crowned at Baylands night • MX By Jerry R. Newrey FREMONT, CA, OCT. 16 Another fantastic night in the Bay area brought out more than 125 riders to Baylands Raceway with all classes well represented. There were a few surprises as well as a few expected winnen. In the 250cc Pros, it was Bruce Manzoni putting together some of his best rides in the 'SI season to muster enough points to captl;1re the overa~ title. In the flnt moto, It was Manzorn and Jeff Jacobson bunting out of the starting gate ahead ?f the rest of th~ field with the Malco of Manzom slipping through the fint tum just ahead of Jacobson. Bringing up the back half of the field were some more of Baylands' outstanding Pros, Ma.tt Arena in third and Lance Coleman In fourth. On the third lap, it was Jacobson sliding underneath Manzoni and putting on a bunt of speed to take the number one spot. Making a gallant move to third was newcomer CoJeman. With the laps running out, it was Manzoni getting the itch to move back into the lead, and he shot by Jacobson on the long front straight and took the checkered flag fonowed by Jacobson and Coleman. In the second moto, it was veteran and past Baylands winner, Arena, pulling one terrific holeshot out of the gate as he dusted the field to the first tum. Following in a small group were Manzoni and Coleman. With Arena way out in front, it was only a question as to who would take the second and third places. Every lap, it was Manzoni and Coleman putting on a great show for the fans. Manzoni finally put a little distance on Coleman and when the flag fell it was Arena taking fint fonowed by Manzoni and Coleman. (213) 588-0763 24·HOUR INFO.
