professional arm of racing a thing or
two. Ascot is the dirt track Mecca (or
hell, depending on your personal
feelings of riding it) and for a sports·
man club to throw a sportsman race
on it with no problems was something
e1se. Early worries of kidlet racen get·
ting mangled vanished, the track sur·
face was like glue, no one fell off seri·
ously and a clap on the back to all the
memben of the San Gabriel Valley
M,C, (pan of the desen brigade) who
were the flagmen - "men," not little
\tids with flags - were all over the
place. and doing exactly what they
were supposed to do.
Our biggest hero ...John Taylor
from District 56 on a Maico who blew
the socks off the rest of the Senior class
, .. he went all around the outside of
the south turn on the start and into the
lead in his heat. The second heat saw
Jim Lynch and Bill Fulton go at it ...
in the semi the fast ones were George
Huebner and Michael "Mercury"
Mane with George barely holding Mer·
cury
off we've
seen
duller
Nationals and then the main. Know·
Iedgeable folk know what Maicos are
capable of if carefully reared, most
flat tracken don't consider 'em as flat
track material. Ha! Away they went
and out front was Taylor and that
Maico and it was no contest from what
was a very talented and fast field.
Lynch ably took over second, followed
by a space, and then sandwich racing
between Huebner, Barrow and Fulton
. . . three abreast coming out of the
turns at times.
There were lots of familiar faces in
the Pro class who came to ride for
trophies only, no loot. Any bus driven
around who would drive a bus just for
the fun of it on a day off? Racen are
unique, but there sat people like Mike
Minnig, Tom Walton, Don Grigsby
and Chris Cannon. Rod Sullivan and
Mike Minnig had a marvelous time of
it up front in both heat and main with
Minnig ending up the leader at the
right time botb times. They were fol·
lowed by Walton, Steve Kanten and
JeffJohnson.
Hard luck man of the night was
Mike Boyle in the Open Junior/Expert
go ... fint the sheriffs department
phoned to say his shop had been
broken into but they'd be there gurading the hole in the door until he arrived; and then damn it if his bike
didn't throw a chain right on the start
... some days it barely does pay to
bother getting out of bed ... The starts
in that class ... well ... some of the guys
had their "big bikes" out for the fint
time, getting ready for their Pro Junior
year. However, under the rules they
couldn't ride those big old Harleys in
the Pro class where they really wanted
to be because they weren't in their
Junior season yet. On the starts, several
found out how hard it is to hold back
one of those big turkeys on a starting
line! Mike Boyes didn't fare all that
well but he'd bothered to come all the
way from Tacoma, WA. Mike Vital
must have been dragging his cases on
the turns, he was that far over. While
anxious'mothen shielded their eyes
their delighted offspring, finally riding
"real" motorcycles, slid around each
other. Up front the West Coast's number one Novice half miler, Pete
Hames, was dashing away with it on
his new Harley-Davidson. Watch out
world, Hames is going to be one like I
knew Eddie Lawson was going to be.
The national number one 125cc rr
scrambler Curtis Cannon won the
125cc class which featured some beautifully turned out equipment ... but
the fight for second between District
56's Ted Taylor who is national num·
ber five and Brent Bowen was a good
'un ... Ted has learned how to just stay
there until the opening comes and
then go through.
Favorite trophy for the night: the
fint one that ever went for a place in
the Mini Novice class went to Robin
Boyle, and where did she win her fint
trophy? Ascot. Not even King Kenny
can claim that one in his scrapbook,

Guyett tops
Novices at OCIR
By Steven Crosby
IRVINE, CA, OCT. 22
It seems as though each week
one or two classes in racing schedule stands out as having the best
action. On this panicular Thursday night the tightest racing was found
in the 125cc Novice and Beginner
ranks.
In the 125cc Novice race Richie
Hovis, as he has been doing the past
few weeks, grabbed the holeshot in the
fint moto. But, as it's been the past
few weeks, he was forced to drop back
after the fint lap. Kun Strand's
Yamaha was right there to take over
the lead but could only hang on for a
lap until Kenny Guyett went by on his
P.O.R.T. Yamaha. Guyett had
staned in founh and moved up
quicltly. Once in the lead he staned to
pull away from the pack. On the third
lap Strand was second with Bret Loudenback third. Dempsey Stocker, who
was in last after one lap, had now
moved up to founh. On the fifth lap
Strand faltered and before be recovered
he was in sixth place. Stocker tried to
get by Loudenback but couldn't and
fmished third behind Guyett and
Loudenback,
The second moto was extended a
couple of laps to give everyone some
more time on the track. Guyett took
the early lead with Strand right
behind. Bob Garabedian was third
after one lap with Craig Gardner
founh. On the third lap Garabedian
managed to pass Strand. Loudenback,
who had a poor start this ~oto,
worked his way up quicltly and passed
Gardner on lap four and Strand on lap
five to take third place. Then he set
out after Garabedian and caught him
on the next lap to move into second.
He was there for two laps before
crashing and falling back to fmish
sixth. Guyett won again with
Garabedian in second and Gardner
third.
Division one of the U5ee Be.ginnen
was a race where the difference
between first and fifth was 1ess than
five seconds for most of both motos. In
the fint JDoto Todd Osowski took a
slight holeshot into the lead with Steve
Potter and Greg Itson right behind.
Gilbert Gallo, wbo staned in fifth
place on his Yamaha, staned to make
steady progress for the lead. On the
third lap he moved to founh when
Potter fell back. On that same lap
Mark Lytle moved his Suzuki from
founb to second place. On the next
lap Gallo put together a series of good
moves and shot from founh to fint
passing Itson, Lytle and finally
Osowski. Gallo held on for the win
with Osowski second. Potter, who had
fallen back to fifth, rallied to finish
third with Lytle founh.
In the second moto Jeff Severe, who
wasn't a factor in the fint moto,
grabbed the lead out of the gate and
held on most of the moto. Gallo
staned in second with Osowslti third.
Again it was a moto of tight racing in
close ranks. Lytle and Potter were
going at it for founh until Lytle went
down on the third lap. Potter was
secure in founb until the last lap when
he crashed and DNF. The top three
remained steady and tight until lap
eight when Gallo fmally caught
Severe. Gallo won the moto with
Severe and Osowski following, Overall
it was Gallo, Osowski and Denton
Weinberg. The best Weinberg did was
a fifth in the second moto but
consistency paid off as his 7·5 was the
score for third with Rick Manin's 6-6
founh.
