Taylor had a picture· perfect lead over Toedmeier and Loch Names (Kaw). who got off in dead last and was making the fastest lap times on his 1978 KX 125. Names is an excellent Pro, who was just out to put pressure on Taylor, who has been elbowed many times about moving up to Pro. These two put on quite a show as Rick Gunderson (Eugene Sill) moved to third. At the flag Taylor won with Names, Esterburg and Sayles following (but not clOM"). Taylor took moto twO as well for another decimating I-I overall followed by Names, who did not count, Esterburg, Gunderson and Sayles. ..... 00 ..... 0') Results Merk FreeH flew to the 2&Occ Pro win et Terrltoriel MX. Keller, Freese, Davis dazzling at Territorial MX By Clay Ught Photo by Richard Earle '- EUGENE, OR, OCT. 25 Race number two of the 198182 season proved to be spectacular at Territorial Raceway located on the outskirts of Eugene, • • 24 Oregon's st"cond largest city. The victors of the day were Rodney Keller (Eugene SUI) in 125cc Pro, Mark Freese, also Eugene SUluki, in 250cc Pro and Yamaha· mounted Gary Davis in Open Pro. All three Eugene riders went to double moto wins. demolishing the fields in their respective classes. In moto one of the 125cc Pros, Jimmy Wiant (Yam of Springfield) took the holeshot followed by Portland's Steve Pless (SUI), Keller and Mike McCormick (Yam support). Keller took over the lead at the completion of one lap, Pless giving chase as did Wiant, who was now in third, being hounded by McCormick. A mid·pack dice was beginning to form between McCormick, who was developing bike problems, and Wayne Church (Valley Cycle Yam). Terry Baker (Eugene SUI) and Richard Earle (DG/Cycle Country Hon) were also joining the mid·pack frenly as Keller was all alone with a super lead followed by Pless, Wiant and McCormick, who moved rapidly from mid to front pack. Keller was long gone, and Pless was closing the gap, but his fine ride came to a halt when he bailed off in the whoops, settling for seventh after remounting. Second went to Wiant with Church third, McCormick fourth, Baker fifth, Earle sixth and Pless rounding out the top seven. Moto two, Keller was quick to put the hammer down while Wiant, Pless, Baker and Church gave chase. Both Earle and McCormick took southern Oregon lOil samples and brought up the rear at the end of lap one. Pless overtook Wiant. for second and WaJ bound and determined to get Keller who wu already moving out on the IeCOnd lap, catching an unbelievable amount of air off the stadium style jumps that line this fine 2.0·mile course. McCormick was in sixth but was putting in the fastest lap times at 2:07 and was soon pressuring Baker for fifth. Keller held off Pless for the win while Wiant closed in for third, Church fourth, Baker fifth, McCormick sixth and Earle seventh. Overall it was Keller (I-I), Wiant (2-g) ·Church (g-4), Pless (7·2) and Baker fifth with his consistent 5·5. In 250/0'pen Pro combined action, Steve Williams (Herb's/Yamaha sup· port) took command over Skeet Hise (Eastside Kaw), Mark Freese (Eugene Sill) .and Gary Bault (Yam of ROM"' burg). Hise's stay in second was short· lived when he snapped a chain while closing in on Williams, putting in Freese for second place. Freese crashed, dropping back behind the Open Pros which consisted of Expert flat-tracker Gary Davis (Yam), Don Durralt (Hon of ROM"burg) and Johnny Olten (Ashland Hon/Mai). Freese moved through the pack at a blistering pace, passing the Open Pros in one swoop. Bault reeled in Williams, who has been out of action as of late due to a summer injury, and just as soon was nabbed by Freese, who was quick to inherit the lead. Freese took moto one followed by Bault, Williams and Hise. Daivis took the Open Pro win as Durrant took second and Olten went DNF. Moto two had Hise haul into the lead with Williams riding his rear fender. Bault held down third and Freese fourth, being held up by Bault. Freese got by Bault and swooped in on Williams, but that was after a three· lap struggle until the halfway mark. Davis was again in fifth and first Open Pro followed by Durrant. 'Hise was hooking his rear tire into the turf and holding new Pro Freese at bay. Freese set up Hise in the back tree· lined series of whoops, but Hise thought otherwise and held on for the W1l1 over Freese, Williams, Bault, Davis and Durrant. Overall it was Freese (1-2), Hise (4·1), Williams (g.g) and Bault (2·4). Davis took the overall with his 1·1 in Open Pro as Durrant took a 2·2 and Olten had a g.g third. Newray FREMONT, CA, OCT. 9 It was another fabulous night in the still summer-like Bay Area, with the always popular Baylands Raceway holding another flawless event. This marked the first time in the year that the Wednesday night show had been moved to a more popular night Friday, the reason being that with all the young riders having to go to school on Thursday, track promoter Tim Meyers decided Friday would benefit both the riders and the track. Once again for the third week in a row and the 10th time in the '81 season, it was Shawn McConn blasting his way by a top notch field to capture the overall title in the 250cc Pros. Action in the 250cc Pros got started off in super fashion as it was Baylands newcomer Craig Christian taking out of the gate first and hitting the first turn ahead of the ultra fast Yamaha of Shawn McConn. It wasn't long before McConn got the urge to lPove his Yamaha to the front, and to the front he did as he shot by Christian and started out to bomb the course. Another rider showing great form was Bruce Manloni and his Maico as he pulled up to Christian and did a super job of getting by him in the tight high banked turn number two. When the checkered flag fell, it was McConn with another win followed by Manloni and Christian. The second moto was probably the battle of the night in all the Pro classes aJ it was McConn and Christian out of the gate dead even, Trailing them came the rest of the pack led by Manzoni. With Christian hanging right on McConn's tail, the question in everyone's mind was who would win this moto. On the fourth lap, Christian showed everyone what the word Pro meant as he dove under· neath McConn in the tough and tight tum six on the back part of the course. McConn was soon back on Christian's rear tire and gassed his Yamaha past Christian to take the checketed flag for his second victory of the night and his sixth in a row. Christian took second with David Drawdy in third, Manzoni hanging on to fourth. Results 250 PRO: 1. Shawn McConn (Yam): 2. Craig Chrtatian (Vim); 3. Bruce Mlnzoni (Mli). 125 PRO: 1. By Boy Alloy SANTA MARIA, CA, OCT. 17-18 The Veterans MX National is an annual event held at Santa Maria's Spillway Park for many years. Members from Over The Hill Gang, all Veterans, us Old Timers and support classes all joined in for this two-day affair with 20-minute motos and 50% trophies in all classes. The track is a fast one and reversing the direction of things on Sunday made it even better and faster in the turns. LoIS of sand abounded, and there were some of us unfortunates who had first hand ex periences as to just how much there was and all in the wrong places. After the moto on Sat· urday, there was a nice barbeque for one and all. The weather was beautiful, and g7 of us Old Timers had some very enjoyable times for lots of good memories. Master Bob Millner was out there in top form both days. Saturday, be came in with a 2-1, and Sunday he was 2-2 for a grand first place overall. Taking second was "Movin' Marv" Olson with a 1·6 for Saturday and a I· I on Sunday. Marv had a bit of bad luck Saturday in one of thOM" sweeper turns, and by the time he got restarted, it was too late to make up for the lost time. Marshall Jennings was running in third place Saturday with a gog going for him. Sunday, things just didn't work out right for Jennings. While flying from a jump in the back sandy area, he took a bad crash and damaged his bike. Luckily, he wasn't hurt too badily, but he had to discontinue things for the rest of the day.
