One hundred fUty riders and a
grand crowd of enthusiastic spectators showed up on ~ beautiful
Sunday moming to enjoy the
deIen breezes and a great day of racing
at Sunrise Valley Cycle Park for a California State MX Championship
qualifier. They got both.
The Open Expert class opened the
day with a spectacular twin performance by Drew Griewe on his Maico,
followed cloeely by Maico-mounted
Scott Johnson and Bill Keefe on a
Husky. They left the field at the gate
and ran I-i-S all the way in the fint
moto. The real battle was for fourth
spot with Bob Elliott (Suz), Dale Lewis
(Mai) and Brian VaTU .(Mai) dicing
it out for Ii laps and finishing in aforementioned order. Eric McCracken did
challenge the leaden in the early going
but ran into mechanical problems and
dropped out. The second moto was
almost an instant replay, giving the
oVfiall win to Griewe followed by
Johnson, Keefe, Elliott, Lewis and
Vargus.
The ladies also put on an interesting
show with Mercedes "Speedy" Gonzales
taking overall honon on her Suzuki as
she led from start to finish to win the
second moto by a wide margin. Cloeest
to her were Barbara Spielman (suz)
and Karen Leitinger. Dede Cates on
her Suzuki led Spielman and Gonzales
around the coune for Ii laps to take
the fint moto, but experienced
problems with her bike in moto two
and dropped out after nuning it
around for four laps. Charlene Ho had
her share of problems with her
Yamaha as she settled for fifth overall
and third in i50s behind Spielman
and Louis Bates (Yam). Finishing
behing Gonzales and Leitinger in the
Ii5cc class were Alice. Tanner and
Donna Gilio, both on Suzukis.
Gale Webb (Hon) and "Wam Bam"
Tam Tracey put on a great show in the
Women's Intermediate class, exchanging places frequently. Tracey took
number one in the fint moto just
ahead of Webb who turned the tables
as Tracey very cloeely followed her
aCJ'OlB the finish in moto two. Natalie
Allen (Yam) was a cloee third in both
motos.
Rodney Phelps took the overall Mini
win on his Yamaha followed by Johnny
Ray (Suz) , Keith Morbito (Yam),
Nicky Pounds (Suz) and Jeff Capt, a
beginner on a Yamaha. These youngSlen lapped the rest of the field as they
put on quite a race while trying to
catch up with Phelps.
Husky-mounted Troy Lee took top
honon in the i50cc Expert class with a
1-5 day in spite of a great performance
by Craig Gormley who left the field far
behind in the second moto to earn the
second spot for the day. The hot race
was for second in moto two as Lee
battled . with second place Friu
Schlegel (Suz) , Dennis Vetter (Yam),
Rod Richardson (Suz) and Matt
Tedder (Suz). They diced and
changed for much of the Ii laps with
not much distance between them at
the checkered flag.
Troy Black (Yam) took two seconds
to capture the overall win in the Ii5cc
Expert class, edging out Suzukimounted Schlegef (1-5), Richard
Sands (Suz) and Randy Yetto (Yam).
Both motos were real donnybrooks
with four riden not able to start moto
two due to damaged bikes (suffered in
moto one). In both motos, there wasn't
too much distance berween the fmt
four riden to cross the line. Jeff
Stanford easily took moto two and
could have made it a cloeer overall
race had he not experienced trouble in
moto one.
