ROSARITO, B.C., MEXICO,
AUG. 16
Richey's Corona Kawasaki-sponsored Lonnie Stefan, Jr. (175
Kaw) dropped 12 seconds to take
home the overall win in the
16
California Racing Club's Gringo
enduro, as well as the top A trophy
donated by the city of Rosarito and
Seguros Progresso Insurance.
Joe Brown came all the way down
from Paso Robles, CA, and came away
as the top 250cc A Vet, losing just 14
seconds. One tick behind for third
overall, first AA, was DiTIl Bille's Tom
Webb on a new 250 Husky.
The CRC set-up crew really outdid
themselves by combining reasonable
speeds,
resets,
fantastic
check
placement and a timely gas stop into
the best event in Rosarito enduro history.
The first loop included a couple of
nasty hills. a couple of surprise checks.
a pretty oak tree· covered valley and
such landmarks as the "Mazenko
Motel" (an abandoned. tipped over
house trailer) and the "UEA
Clubhouse" (a fire ravaged line shack).
Out of the 19 one-loop finishers,
Kay Hopkins (200cc B Woman) came
out on top, losing only nine seconds.
Indeed, Kay's score was better than
many of the best loop one scores
turned in by top A and AA rider. Rod
Blinzler (I25cc C-16) lost just 13
seconds for second overall. Fred
Mulder was hit for a point and 37
seconds, but he was still good for third
overall and first 200cc C-16. Jeff David
picked up the top Mini trophy with a
score of 2 .1l!0.
The second loop again featured
excellent check placement as it ran
inside the flJ'Sl loop with a shared
beginning and ending. Faster speeds,
along with the dust and the check
placement, grabbed valuable minutes
and seconds from riders. A special test
that featured check-in and tiebreaker
check·out, was run at 24 mph over a
section that had been difficult at 18
per on the first loop. Later on was
"Langley'S Ball Bearing Factory,"
rough going beCause an upheaval of
nature shoved millions of smooth
round riverbottom rocks to the top of a
ridge. A final tiebreaker check, a 15minute gas stop and then the final
field check at the end of a 30 mph
section rounded out the loop.
Fourth overa1I and second AA was
Grant Palenske on his 490 DMG
Maico with 16 seconds on his score-_

Saddleback
By Lee Taylor
ORANGE, CA, AUG. 23
Steve Banning, riding a Wheelsmith Maico, took Saddleback
Park by storm with a pair of wins
in both the 250cc and Open Pro
classes in this California Racing Club
MX.
When the Open Pros blasted off the
line for their flISt moto Bruce McDougal
(Hon) was followed in close pursuit by
Banning, Dave Belger (Yam) and
Kevin Davis (Mai).
Banning soon took charge and
McDougal soon found himself PmlllUred
by Bill Keefe. But as Banning broke
away, changes took place throughout
the pack, and as the moto drew to a
close Davis and Bob Schulz were fighting it out for second. At the finish
Banning led the way, Schulz followed
in second, and Davis was third.
The second round of action saw a
Banning/Davis battle shape up with
Schulz hounding them both in third.
By day's end, Banning drew top dollar
for the ca, second place loot went to
Davis and Schulz took third place
honon.
The fmt 250cc Pro moto saw Greg
Taylor (Yam) grab the holeshot,
followed closely by brand new Pro
Brian Fry (Suz) in his first Pro race.
Fry took over the lead as Taylor, beset
with an injury, fell back in the pack.
Banning was soon burning up the
track, picking off riders ri,ht and left
to take over the lead. With changes
taking place throughout the pack,
Troy Lee. riding a Husky for Pro
Circuit, zoomed up into second, bring·
ing with him Matt Temppe, RUJS
Wageman and Bill B~r. It was a
topsy-turvy race at best, with Wageman
beset with mechanicals and set back
