... - -_ ... - Up front Kaplan made a brief chal· le~ for the lead, only to find his own plllIItion c~ by Roee1er. Lany took the point position with four laps to go after getting by Kaplan a lap earlier. After that Kaplan started to tire and was an easy mark for Kelly. With three laps remaining Nation dropped out with unknown problems and the race set up as a Roseler/Kelly batde to the fmish. The batde was ul· timately decided on the motocross course, where Kelly took the lead and held on for the remaining two laps to take the win. "The last half of the race, ,!hen everybody started slowing down and pacing themselves, was when I really started to push it. Iltnew it was going to be a long race and I wanted to save my tear-offs so I could see to make a last-minute move," said Kelly. Roeseler took second with Kaplan a secure third. Randy Morales took his second Amateur win with a sixth overall finish. National1y-prominent motocrosser Jimmy Weinert recently turned ~O, and in District ~7, that means you're eligible to ride the Vets class'. On Saturday, Weinert demolished the Vets class, winning easily over Rick Shirey and Jim O'Neal. Randy NortDan had some success recendy with an Ed Ellis-tuned Yamaha TT500, and he used that to easily win the four-stroke race over O'Neal. In Saturday's unclassified race, which served many of Sunday's Expert competiton as a wartD·up, Ken Zahrt took the win on a 495 KTM. Shawn Mahn took second with Jeff Kaplan third. Open Expert winner Tom Kelly dropped out of the race early when he lost a grip just as he entered one of the water crossings and he then tipped over for a swim. The most popular spot for spectators was the second water crossing, which gave the riden the choice of a straight jump over the water or a slower bridge route. One of the more popular pasttimes of the weekend was to tell a rider that the ramp was low and required a high speed run to clear the water, and then go over to the jump and help shovel dirt to make it higher. • ~ payfull shot goArst classl Can-Am dealers are dealing! they're offering you winning prices on winning bil; 3. o-yne llaedworth. 2!iO EX: 1.
