TEN YEARS AGO D6unark's Ole ODen took the World Individual Speedway Championship, posting a perfect I5-point score before a crowd of 52,000 in Goteburg, Sweden. Meanwhile, back in the United States, Steve Bast captured the California State Speedway Championship, also with a perfect score. Yamaha-mounted Hurley Wilven led the way in the big finale to the MM's Cycle Guide GP, winning the "invitational" over Howard Lynggard (Yam), Ralph White (Kaw) and Reg Pridmore (Nor). White was running the all new Kawasaki Mach IV, a 750cc two-stroke triple. Sammy Tann.er took Ascot win number 400 as he topped a Junior/Expen semi to get into the main event during Ascot's weekly half mile competition. Tanner grabbed he early lead in the main, but was paSsed by Junior Ron Moore and eventual winner Jody Nicholas. Steve Burgas and Don Fuller pooled their talents on a Yamaha to win the Pony Express 200 desen race in Faust, UT. They were followed by the tearns of Jerry Davis/Dale Blood and Preston Gerber/Bill Silvenhorne. A couple of up and comen were racing - in 250cc class action at Dover Park in Sandy, OR. Rid Burgett won the 250cc Expen division on a CZ, while Kawasaki-mounted Chuck Sun was the 250cc Junior winner. Night motocross racing at EI Toro, CA, saw Morris Malone narrowly miss a double win. After taking the 250cc Expen class, Malone had the Open win locked up until a last lap tangle forced him to settle for second behind Greg Smith. Bruce Baron won the 125cc Expens. The '71 U.S. ISDT World Trophy team lost one of its members when Jeff Penton broke his foot during a practice trial in Canada. Dane Leimbach was picked to replace Penton for the Isle of Man event. The Bushmasters and Prospectors clubs teamed to throw a dual European Scrambles in the 110 degree heat of the California desert. The only things hotter than the weather were some of the riders, like Rich Tborwaldson who took both Open Amateur/Expert class wins on his TM400 Suzuki. Other double winners were Terry Clark, who rode a Harley-Davidson Baja in the Trailbike class. and Tom Brooks, Jr., Carabela-mounted in the 125cc Amateur/Expert class. The 250cc Amateur/Expert wins were split between Jeff Wright (Ric) and Jim Brown (Bul). John Gennai continued his domination of northern California scrambles, taking both the 250 and 650cc Expert classes at Fremont. Action Fours debuted their doubleengined (two 750 fours) dragster in a meet at Lions Drag Strip.
