Cenlral Pipeline _I I I -I \ 00 c::J') CONGRATULATES TERRY POOVEY Indianapolis AMA National Mile Winner The 125cc: Beginners end Novices found the Rio Bravo track to their liking. "Dynamite" Dan explodes at Rio BravoMX By Usa Mllcich HOUSTON, TX, AUG. 50 Rio Bravo MX Park combined the 125 and 250cc Experu but scored them separately and started them in two rows today, which suited the winners, Dan Conway and Mike Clements, just fine. It didn't take "Dynamite" Dan very long (three laps to be exact) to overtake Ricky Glaser and claim first in his 250cc Expert class. Glaser is a usual adversary for Dan, yet today he offered liule more than a brief obstacle. Once past Glaser, Conway used up his lap time wisely and stretched his lead farther and farther with every pass of the score booth. Glaser held on to second place till the fifth lap when his anns started to cramp badly, and Willie Phee traded his third place with him as they crossed over a jump. Being in second wasn't close enough, however, to catch sight of Dan, who was lapping Glaser by the seventh lap. The second lineup was minus Glaser. Kevin Schwartz was off the line first but shut off the throttle sooner than Conway who eased past him around the first tum and rode off to repeat his first moto run. Dean Walker proceeded to pass Schwartz also and placed second for the day. In the 125cc Expert class, the hole· shot was snatched by our frequently seen first place runner Mike Clement. Keith Eldred followed behind as did john Rollo. Clement kept the distance safe between himself and Eldred, and on the fourth lap they both made errors at the same time. Clement had rounded a sharp right· hand comer and come off a jump too far to the right, smashing his foot up against a steel pole on the side Of the track used to hold up red, barners. As Eldred rounded the same comer, his back end slid out, but he recovered it before totally spinning out. He turned the wick on full to try and gain on Clement, but with one lap to go, time ran out before his enthusiasm did. Eldred stayed pumped up, though, and demanded the holeshot in moto two. Clement obliged for half a lap then took over and ran away in first place. Mark Smith was holding third and Mike Fesser fourth. Smith and Fesser passed Eldred by the second lap, and he was never able to regain his foothold on the second place spot. Clement manhandled his Suzuki over the jump before the Rose Rich and Texas Yamaha sign setting up for the oncoming left-hand tum. He got into the 250cc Expert traffic of Walker and Schwartz by the fifth lap and skillfully maneuvered by them. Rounding out the seventh lap his concentration escaped for a moment causing him to overshoot a left tum berm, narrowly missing a tree that a rider bulldozed into earlier. He rode off the other side and went down into a ditch. This didn't thwart his plans, however, even though he now was on the track back· wards; he simply turned around and rode over to his exit journey point and got back on the track. Good humored Clement rode the comer again (the right way) and continued on his quest for the checkered flag. • Proudly Announce. it'. next GIANT PARKING LOT SALE! Sat. Sept. 19th • Sun. Sept. 20th 1.
