"Miltie" Macedo topped the 80cc Expens with a rare holeshot to beat rival Winlr.ie Freitas, and Aaron Hill took most of the big bike Expen cash with a win in 500cc Expen and a close second to Bruce Johnson in 250cc Ex. pen. The 80cc Expens would stan things off for the evening of racing. Macedo, who has chased Freitas in recent weeks as the result of bad stans, would let Freitas do the chasing tonight. He pulled the holeshot on the Oilzall/ Champion Spark Plug/Macedo Con. struetion YZ and took a wire.to-wire win, literally smoking the field. Freitas opened up a big cushion for second, and third went to Dean Vince1et. Jeff Bingham was first in 80cc Nov. ice/Junior combined with Dion Clardy the first Novice. Freitas came back and posted the lOOcc Expen win, outdistancing Craig Johnson and Kelley Fischer. Woody Rogers continued to dominate the 125cc Novice/Junior class with Franlr. Cole the top Novice in second. The 250s were up next. Jim Eden posted the Novice win over Billy Taylor. James' Needham held off former top Novice Danny McDonnell and his trick Honda for the Junior win, and Brian Sansing was third. Johnson and Hill had a heck of a race in 250cc Expen as they opened a big cushion between them and the rest of the field. Hill tried all he could to get by but there was no way around as Johnson held him off for the win. Joe Knight was a distant third, and Dave Walden picked up the final payback. Don Stommel took the win in 500cc Novice/Junior combined, Bill Buhlman was top Novice in second. Aaron Hill on the Del Cal1sen Honda P';lt the close to his successful evening with the 500cc Expen win over Knight. The 14-year·old Hill is quicltly climbing up the Black Plate charts and seems to be getting better every race. Results 80 EX: 1. MIce Mecedo; 2. WInkle fNlI8o; 3. o.n Virlc:oNt 80 NOY/JR: 1. .wt ~ 2. By Judy Roe COEUR D'ALENE, ID, AUG. 20 This week'. race action at 82 the Hueuer Speedway Tlnmday Dight flat .track included the Kirk Guy- mmon Memorial race, a 25-1ap ewmt won by Kmn Soider (KTM). Sec· ond place was Ron Yamamoto (Yam), and third place wasJim Hamby (Hon). ~. and Mrs. Guymmon made the lopg mp all the way from Utah once again this year to watch the memorial event which provided the usual excitement from a stagered stan. Kevin won on a 250, by the way, which has been hard to beat ~I year. The 500Cc Expen first heat was a real barn burner with Darrell Sims and Tony Cruickshanlr. side by side for several laps. But when Sims slid out and almost went down, Cruickshanlr. kept the gas on and took the win, with Arney Wick taking third, and Brad Walten taking founh place in the heat. Our Mini class riders were hot as usual, and Brian Thompson pulled off Kopp in the a win over dominator third moto of the Mim Expen class. In the 250cc Amateur main, Jeff Seldon grabbed the lead down the back stretch, but hit the berm coming out of the pit turn, and Jackie Smith went into first place. After a delay when the red flag came out for some downed riders, Seldon took the lead again, but this time managed to hold on with Smith second and Mike An· derson in third. In the 500cc Amateur main event Bill Capellen took the lead and let Pa~ Montandon and Phil Hamby fight for the second spot. Hamby flashed by on the second lap, and even though he tried to catch Capellen, it was to no avail, and Capellen took the win with Hamby in second. In the 500cc Expert main, Darrell Sims jumped into the lead off the line, while weekly winner Yamamoto had to work his way up from futh position. For the final two laps of the race, the first four places changed at least three times, but at the checkered flag with "the win was Sims, Wick second, Cruickshanlr. third and Yamamoto fourth. Congratulations to Lowell Thompson from Spokane who recently competed in the world Mini Cycle Championship in Oklahoma. With over 1800 riders competing, Lowell received first place in the Stock 60cc class and second place in the Modified 60cc class. In the 80cc class, Lowell placed seventh and got eighth place in the Modified 80cc class. Lowell races at Huetter Speedway every week, and we're proud to say he does! Congrats, Lowell. Joey Key, Marker maul MabtonMX By SU8nne Light end Fr8nk Mier8u MABTON, WA, AUG. 16 The weather was hot in eastern Washington, and so was the rae· ing at Mabton Dunes Motocross Park. The temperature was a scorching 100 degrees and nearly 100 die· hard MXers were on hand to try and beat the heat. The winners of the day in the Pro classes were Art Key (Suz) in 125cc Pro action, Duane Mark· er (Yam) in 250cc Pro, and the Open Pro went to John Christian, Jr. (Yam), who finished second in 250cc Pro also. In 125cc Pro round one, Key was quick to unlock the gate and zipped to the head of the class followed by Kevin Logsdon (Yam) and Dennis Ostriem (Wayne's Arco/Yam). These three provided the real action up front, bur It was Key who was running away with the moto while Logsdon and Ostriem went at it tooth and mail for second: - - Key had enough wind to bag the moto win and was back out front again in moto two on his Sports Cycle Suzuki Floater. Logsdon and Ostriem were again arguing over second, swapping spots until Logsdon held firm, and Key took the checkered flag for the win and the overall. In the 250cc Pro class, it was Duane Marker (Yam sappon) who took off at the stan of the moto, launching himself to the front into turn one followed by John Christian, Jr. (Bellevue Yam) and Kevin Berry (Tolands Kawasaki). Marker and Christian went at it for a ~ battle. Marker is gaining form agam after a long layoff due to an injury and held off advances from Christian for a while. Christian did get by, though, going on for the win when Marker did a number, getting tossed off in the meantime. In moto two, Marker could taste the overall and pulled the holeshot. The pack then funneled into turn one with Christian in second and Berry third. Marker knew that he would have to do some fast riding to hold off Christian for the win, and on the last lap, things were getting interesting and close, but Marker went on for the win. Overall it was Marker (2-1), Christian (1-2) and Berry (~.~). In Open Pro action, Christian was back again on his Bellevue Yamahasponsored 465 and took immediate command over Don Kriesche (Honda House). Christian took both motos for a double moto blitz and the overall payoff while Kriesche went 2-2 for a second. Mark Sanders (Yam) of Kenniwick, WA swept both motos in tbe 125cc Junior class for another double moto romp, embarassing his fellow riders after a brief dice from Stacy Grant (Yam) in molO one and Martin Klossner (Suz) in moto two. The next race here at Mabton Dunes MX will be a benefit race for the Motocross and Trophee des Nations races in Belgium and West Germany. ResultS MINI JR: t. Doug K _ (Kow.; 2. Jell Bishop (Han); 3. Two for Eaton at SIRnlghtMX By Suenne Light KENT, WA, AUG. 14 It was "two·fers" night at Seattle International Raceway as Team Maico rider Eric Eaton was vic· torious in both the Open and 250cc Pro classes in round two of the Weekend Challenge Series of Moto· Cl'OSII. SCOll Tyler (Yam) topped the 1~5cc Pro class, but it was Danny Diessa who put pressure on Tyler. This could ve,ry well have been the best rac· ing so far at SIR's night season as 200 riders packed the park to do battle for series points. In Open Pro racing, Eaton pulled the holeshot and proved his top 20 National finishes were not a fluke as he destroyed the starting area on his Mega Two. Chris Moritz'(Yam)-hetd'a . stable second, but couldn't put a pass on the Maico whiz kid. Joe Pitrman (Yam) was making his presence known an~ moved to third by the midway POlDt of the 15-lap moto while Don Knoblauch (Yam) held down founh. Up front, Eaton used banzai tactics to clear .~e section of triple jumps with ease,. gaJmng ground over the charging Montz. Eaton took the moto win with Moritz second. Steve Miller (Yam) passed Pittman in the late going to talte a third. Second moto was another Eaton dis· appearance. The young Maico rider was geared for takeoff as he rocketed throu~h the air, leaving the pack to eat hIS healthy roost, and with SIR's rocks galore, it spells trouble for anyone behind an Open bike, especially Eaton's. Eric showed only his rear fender to a distant Knoblauch who was WFO, but couldn't stay with Eaton who took the win and the overall with a I-lover Pittman (~-~) and Knoblauch (5-2). Eaton was at it again and in control at the start of 250cc Pro moto one. Eaton and Doug Taylor (Yam went at it until Eaton decided to claim the win for himself. Timmy Walker (Enumclaw Suz) held a third with his blistering pace, but Timmy's bike went one way and he went the other still taking third. ' Moto two had Eaton bag the start, and that's all it took as he held it open start to finish for another I-lor four· for-four tally for the day which says a lot for this rider. Taylor held second giving him a 2-2 score which took him to the pay window for a second overall. The 'largest Pro class was the 125s with 12 riders revving to go. Out of the gate came Danny Diesso (Burien Suz) with SCOll Tyler (Deve\. Eng.lYam) and former Washington number one Gary Racca (Suz) holding down the top three at the completion of one lap. Diessa was taking the better of two lines and held Tyler at bay while Racca was left to shake off Jeff Moore (Bellevue Suz) and Kenny Almquist (Yam). Diesso took the checkered first with a five-second spread between Tyler, Racca and Moore. Tyler took the nod and caught Diesso napping at the start of the second moto, but it took Diesso only one lap to work through the traffic and into second to put pressure on Tyler, who has recently stepped down from 250 and Open bikes and looks to be the one to beat (or at least try) in the 125cc class. Tyler held tough to talte the win and overall with a devastating 2-1 over Diessa's 1-2. Racca took a fme third overall with consistent ~-~ finishes. The largest race here at SIR has a,Jways .been the 125cc B class. Thirty nders lined the gate for a winner-take· all affair. It seems that the score keepers were also caught napping and couldn't get it together in moto one (not to knock the fine ladies, they have a rough job; how would you like to do it?), so they decided a winner-take· all heat race would be the way to go. Bobby Rowe (Enumclaw Suz) led all the way from start to finish with Sean Callahan (Suz) and Jerry Andrews (Suz) in there to make it a battle. It looked to be a Suzulti sweep until Steve Fox (Kaw) took fourth while fifth through 12th went to Suzuki riders. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Eric Eaton lMail; 2. Joe PIttnwllYom!' • 250 PlIO: t.
