Newray FREMONT. CA. AUG. 5 For the first time this year, Baylands saw a touch of cold weather show up for their Wednesday night MX races. The fact that the chilly weather came only made for some of the hottest ground pounding and din burning MX to hit the' Baylands course. With that in mind. jerome Heiberger of San jose proved to be the biggest upsetter of the night. Heiberger showed the fans that it's not always the big Yamaha that take the 250cc Pros. but in fact. his Can·Am ride was the strongest of the evening. In the first moto. Heiberger jumped into the lead with the help of a'super holeshot followed by a grou p of Yamaha that were breathing down his back. All through the first two laps; Heiberger maintained his slim lead only to be followed by the strongest rider at Baylands, Shawn McConn and his Yamaha. and also by Troy DeHerrera aboard yet another Yamaha. Knowing that he would need a bunch of room in order to win, Heiberger shot down the straights and blazed through the high banked turns and found the perfect groove around the track while trying to buy himself enough space to take the checkered flag. A truly great fight for second took place as McConn and DeHerrera fought like cats and dogs with McConn finally breaking loose. He made a super bid to take the Heibe, rger's CanAm only to fall just about a bikelength behind at the checkered flag. The second moto saw Heiberger race out of the gate and become the only rider in that moto to have clear running to the flag. Some tremendous riding took place behind Heiberger as McConn and DeHerrera took pan in one of the best confrontations. McConn would pull ahead on the long straights. and DeHerrera would jump back into second in the short and sharp 180-degree turns. When the checkered flag came out. it was Heiberger taking his second win of the night with McConn taking an overall second with two second place finishes and DeHerrera managing enough points to take the third place monies. In I25cc Pro. it was Willie Miller who set the crowd to their feet as he took the first moto with some riding that seemed to amaze even the other riders. No matter where Miller took the powerful Suzuki. the rider from Ross manaM f!l.ti.nq~~.;9~TleilP.~ The battle for second place consisted of some of Baylands' best riders Rick Ryan, Kimo Casey. Paul Duchscher and by about two or three more riders. At the end of the moto. it was Miller aboard his Suzuki in first followed by Ryan and his Yamaha with Duchscher taking the third spot. In the second moto. a slight change occurred as Duchscher shot out of the' starting gate followed by a swarm of other riders. Duchscher had no problems handling the Baylands track aboard his Yamaha; the only thing he had to worry about was the possibility of an error in judgement and having his bike take a spill. With the pace becoming very fast. a number of the second and third place riders seemed to falter as Duchscher blazed to victory followed by Miller and Casey. The overall title went to Miller with Duchscher and Casey taking second and third. With the minis taking to the Baylands course. most of the .spectators seemed to sense some of the most exciting racing of the evening. The action started out a very heated competition as Scott Takacs hit a perfect starting gate and jumped into an early lead followed by jim Williams and his Yamaha. With more and more new faces taking to the smaller classes. Takacs really had a battle on his hands as he dodged back and fourth with Williams and Gary jervis. When the flag came out. it was wire to wiJ"e withTakacs edging out Williams and jervis. In the second molO, the finishes were the same with Takacs in first. Williams in second and jervis in third. One good last note of the night brought out some of the wily Veterans and Old Timers. One of the bigger surprises at Baylands is the superman of the Veterans junior Division, Bill Spinola, who rides a Maico and does all the wrenching himself. As a new· comer to the sport. he's learned a lot from watching other riders at Baylands. This week it was Spinola sweeping both molOS and by more than half a lap in each. Altogether. this brings Bill's great record to five straight moto wins with a few seconds and thirds. Talking to Bill reveals one of the most intense. and popular riders at Baylands. and he intends to start running in the Intermediate classes in a few weeks. • 00 0') SlJIBllllKE RJlK 1lMCE.
