CYCLE NEWS., _ e__ Stat To Ip_ _ Meyers' lead at the halfway point. Murray opened a lead over Picaso to make his move on Meyers and the lead. The white flag came out with Meyers leading Murray by four seconds. Meyers shocked the crowd when he fell at the end of the dogleg and Murray went by for the moto win before Meyers could restart. Meyers did hold second for the overall win and Picaso was third. Ed Stovin won a comeback tiebreaker to take the overall win in the 250cc Junior clalS. Alan Seaman got the holesbot in the first moto with David Williams. who is second in the KPRII Coca-Cola Summer Series, following into second. Stavin (fourth in the series) jammed into third. The leaders stayed wheel to wheel until the start of the third lap when both Williams and Stovin passed Seaman for the lead. Williams was running the fastest lines as he started to pull away from Stovin, who was being pressured by Seaman. Seaman passed Stovin going over the KPRI "double doubles" at the start of the fifth lap. Stovin tried to repass on the same spot but Seaman held him off. After one more unsuccessful try, Stovin went inside on the Coca-Cola Big Berm in a move that netted him second. In round two Seaman got his second holeshot of the night with Stovin second and Williams third. Lap three saw Stovin get by Seaman for the lead, with Williams putting Seaman back another position on the following lap. Seaman came back to regain second with Williams staying close until he slid out in the hairpin. It was really very, very hot. Anyway, 28 Old Timers downed gallons and gallons of Gatorade and tried to find some shady spots. Ed Michetti, DeAnza promoter and also an Old Timer Master, had the track nicely prepared with just enough changes to make things exciting. The Masters division was wrapped up by Marvin Olson, who captured both motos with some smooth flying. Dan Sanchez blasted into the second spot at the start of moto one and held second to take the checkered flag 10 laps later. In the second moto Blackie Lewis put his Yamaha into the second spot, passing several riders to get there. Sanchez was second overall. Dick Mosley, who got the Expert holeshot, held that lead for nine laps before Chuck Woody blasted into the lead. Mosley held in for second. Buzz Moeller put his Husky into a smooth line that put him into third at the fmish line. In moto two Mosley quickly took command of the track as he put his Yamaha into the lead, gassed it for 10 laps and won. Buzz Moeller took second with a display of some excellent riding. George Spearing blasted into the third spot. Amateur Gene Powell knew how to manage a hot, grueling track. He won both motos, despite getting a last stan in moto two. Manny Dauber also came through with a good performance as he aggressively dominated the number two spot in both motos. Novice Ray Arnold flit his Yamaha four-stroke into a winmn" gear. gassed it to the lead, and easily won both motos. Dick Varvel found a smooth line into second place in moto one. Howard Zimmerman followed Varvel in for a third place win. John Turdo, who has really been going all out for the action. gassed his Yamaha into the second spot in the second moto. Hopwood, Palmer top CMMC Barona Oaks By Rod Eschenburg SAN DIEGO, CA, AUG. 16. 1981 David Hopwood switched brands and promptly took lili; new Suzuki into the winner's circle in the Stock 125cc Expert class at Barona Oaks Raceway. It was a real day of firsts as new U5ee Expert Mitch Palmer (Suz) made his debut with a come from behind win in the Modifieds as he downed fellow freshman Expert Alex Leon (Suz) and Hopwood. L.eon also had a second in the Stocks after a torrid duel with Hopwood in both motos. To round out the day's "firsts", Bobby Vrhel (Yam) took a wild 4-1 effort for the win over A. D. Pifer for a career first in the Stock 125cc Inter· mediates, -and Jim Pearson (Suz) scored his first Intermediate win in teh Modifieds. Pearson's victory was a tiebreaker over Keith Craig (Yam), 5·1 to 2-2. The 125cc Novice riders were not to be outdone as Yamaha·mounted John Connolly scored his first career victory in the Stocks off a come from behind victory over John Yonekura (Suz) who survived a very hard endo in the second moto to combine a 1-5 effort for the second place in the 15 rider field. Yonekura was not to be denied, however, as he came back for a two for two sweep of the Modifieds. The Mini Experts were non-existant due to Ponca City, but the Novices were out in goodly numbers. Paul Cortez (Yam) went two for two in the Stocks over Michael Dickerson who had a real good go with Craig Duff. In the Modifieds, Terry McClure scored his first victory of the year after a hard spill in the Stocks as he downed Dickerson and Duff. The 12·16 Beginners staged their own brand of mayhem Sunday with Scott Strothers sneaking up on the win with a 5-4 effort over Raul Marquez (6-2), Jeff Moore (5-5). Bob Marehand (9-1) and
