O'Mara, Nelson
nail AME Yamaha
Dealers Series
second round
By Judy Greenberg
VALENCIA, CA, AUG. 23
American Motocross Enterprises
presented the second round of
the Yamaha Dealers Series on
the Shadow Glen Course at Indian Dunes. There was 100% payback
to the Pros, and over $500 in Yamaha
gift certificates awarded by drawing.
American Honda's Johnny O'Mara,
the LOP Suzuki of Mike Brown and
the MX Fox/Man. Yamaha of Jon
Nelson were the top purse winners in
the 250, 500 and 125cc Pro classes,
respectively.
Jim HoOey, riding support for Yamaha took the early lead in the fust 250cc
moto. O'Mara climbed up right behind
him and made his move on the inside
of the sand straight. Yamaha support
rider Pete Snorte.Iand filled the third
spot, with the BG Oil Yamaha of Mark
White in fourth. One third of the way
into the moto, while Holley was
looking for a way back into the lead,
he aashed hard and was forced to
retire. Meanwhile, John Whelchel (An.
swer Products), who was ninth at the
stan, was moving steadily through
traffic. Mter a short battle with White,
Whelchel was in third and then staned
to seek out Snoneland. By this time,
O'Mara had an extensive lead and was
untouchable. Snoneland had. enough
of an edge to remain solid in second,
despite the quick·moving Whelchel,
who gained ground right to the finish.
O'Mara made it look easy the
second time out, taking control from
the gate, right down to the fmish in
the smooth style he is so well known
for. Snorteland and White held equal
distances in second and third. But, for
the second time that day, Whelchel
fought his way up through the pack,
picking up positions and time with
each lap. On the last lap, he made a
successful play on White for another
third finish.
At the start of moto one of the 125cc
Pro class, the Crossroads Suzuki of Jim
Sendlebach and Jim Pappe (Suz) en·
tered into an immediate duel for the
lead. Holley's Yamaha was in fourth
but edged up, passing Nelson and Sendlebach before eventually taking the
lead from Pappe, who for a while
stuck to him like glue, trying to take it
back. Sendlebach kept his wheels in
front of Nelson as the front·running
foursome left the pack behind them.
But when Sendlebach broke down,
Nelson was in for a solid third.
The second round belonged to the
International Yamaha of Doug Gentry,
in one of the most impressive rides of
the day. Gentry came out of the gate
in first followed by Zoti Meszaros
(Suzuki of Van Nuys) and Nelson.
Soon, Nelson put the pass on Meszaros
and charged after Gentry. Pappe was
on the move and slipped by Meszaros
into third. When Pappe went off the
track, costing him a few places, Gary
Curtis (Suzuki of Bakersfield) was next
to make a pass into third. Gentry and
Nelson were well out in front when
Gentry spun out and Nelson slipped by
him. But Gentry was back up on the
move and soon put Nelson behind him
for good, while he built a tremendous
SAN BERNARDI 0
lead to the finish. Curtis was 15 seconds
behind Nelson and 17 seconds in front
of Pappe, who once again picked off
riders until he was in fourth, with Jon
Ortner in fifth. The top five were well
spread out quite a distance from the
rest of the pack when it a.lI broke loose..
Curtis closed on Nelson and two laps
later found Pappe breathing down his
neck. The trio battled whee.! to wheel
to the wire. Nelson's 3·2 gave him the
overall, Gentry went 5-1 for second,
with Pappe (2·4) and Curtis (6-3) in
for third and fourth place money.
Mike Brown went wire to wire to
win the first 500cc Pro moto. Tom
Kelly (Malcolm Smith Hus) held onto
second, while Tracy Oswell moved
from fifth to third in one lap. The
Kern Sport Cycle Husky of Greg Torgerson diced it out with Oswell, but
eventually succumbed to his pressures
and finished fourth.
The second time Kelly holeshot, but
Oswell pushed his Maico right into the
lead and took off for the win. Kelly,
Torgerson and Brown diced behind
him, with Brown moving to second
and stretching it out, leaving Kelly to
finish third.

Speedway J. J. 7 MX
By Myron Hemley
CHULA VISTA, CA, AUG. 19
Scott Meyers took the 125cc Pro
class with a 1-2 finish at Speedway 117's Wednesday night Continental Moto-sports Club MX.
Meyers (Suz) took and held an early
lead in the first moto, increasing his
lead through the first half of the molO
until he held an eight second
advantage by lap four. Terry Murray
gassed his Suzuki into second over
Joaquin Picaso. Murray and Picaso
diced over second until the fourth lap
when Picaso made his move through
the Carousel. Picaso then started his
move on Meyers, eventually finishing a
mere two bikelengths back. Murray
finished third, five seconds behind the
leaders.
Meyers doubled holeshots as he once
again took an early lead in the second
round. Murray and Picaso were back
in second and third. It looked like the
two were going to fight for second all
