a dusty chain·reaction pileup that felled several others and scattered the pack. "All I saw was bikes tumbling through the. dust," said Class II com· petitor Fred Wing. "It-sure screwed up my line," he added with a laugh. Sundahl led the action as the pack sped through the asphalt sweeper that is turn six of Riverside.'s road course. Weixeldorfer moved to a threatening second on his '82 ATC250R as they completed the first of 10 laps with Holiday Honda's Rodney Shedenhelm a lone third. Barney Johnson headed a short freight train fighting for fourth, keeping his Mugen USA-backed 360 Mugen/Honda ahead of Class II rider Ken Harayda on a Tucson ATC Supply Honda and Harry McDermo.tt on the 3- Wheeling Magazine project ATC/Huntington Honda/Mugenl Trinity Cycle American Honda/Frame Werkes entry. (On the parade lap, stray baling wire on the course suddenly wrapped itself around his leg and pulled him off leaving him a bit shaken.) 'The race up front got tighter over the next few laps as Weixeldorfer inched closer to his teammate. Finally, Wax saw an opening and shot past Sundahl in the dirt seciton just before turn six as they started lap four. After that, Weixeldorfer continued to stretch his lead a bit each lap with Sundahl con· tent to follow; "I didn't want to crash, just get first in my class." "I didn't know what would happen at the ·beginning," admitted Weixel· dorfer. "I got off the line about fourth or fifth ... and just stayed 'with my teammate. We were having. fun; he was my only threat." Harayda plugged himself into third after the halfway point and had no trouble staying there to the end of the race. Johnson got his Class 'tIl trike around McDermott wLth a couple laps to go to end up second in class, fourth overall. Honda's Mike Chester worked his way up to .sixth overall, fourth in class after four laps, holding it to the finish. In Class I, Dickson had hustled his yellow buzz bomb past many of the Class II .trikes that started ahead of him and was as far up in the unofficial standings as seventh overall on la p six before dropping out. Sparks took the class lead and win after that, also finishing seventh overall, unofficially, ahead of Class II entrants Gary Menefee, California Off Road Cycle's William Trotter, Mugen's "Dirty" Derrick Davidson (the third and final Class III rider), Mike Sherman-sponsored Michael Cousimano and Mike's Trikes of Claremont/Torco/Danny's Machine/Robby Martion Spec.-backed Perry Thompson. The next Class I finisher followed, 3-B Lightning/Trick Enterpn"Ses rider Steve Wright on one of the few Varnahas in the race. Third in class went to Tom Gaian on an American Honda/ Smitty's ATC/Dickson Design bike, right at the class limit of 200cc. Gaian did it the hard way as he lost his seat on the first lap. Despite suspension, he took a rough ride yet looked fresh afterwards. Weixeldorfer's winning average speed of 42.260242 mph was quite respectable, beatinjt Ivan Stewart's Class 8- winning 41.942 and many other fourwheeled cars. The Class 1 cars at 47.89 and the bikes at 48.324 were the fastest vehicles of the weekend. "Thanks to (SCORE President) Sal (Fish), it all happened," .said Weixeldorfer in a post-race pressroom interview. "I'm extremely glad; it's opened up a new frontier for us." A former motocrosser, he declared, "When you're 20, it's time to quit twowheelers'" • Results CLASS I 12OOcc): 1. Curtis Sparks (Han); 2. S _ Wright !Yom); 3. Tom GNn (Han); 4.
