One piece of equipment that cannot be ignored, however, is a helmet. Studies of motorcycle accidents financed by the U.S. Department of Transpor· tation show that any helmet is better than no helmet, and that the biggest difference in, injuries is seen between riders with helmets and those without helmets. That being the case, a $29.95 plastic helme~ from the local discount store can go a long way in insuring a kid's safety in case of a tip-over. For maximum protection parents can spend $90 for a full-face, laminated fiberglass Bell Mini-Moto helmet. Other helmets are priced in between these two extremes. Helmets are available in a wide range of sizes to fit just about every kid old enough to hold his head upright with the extra weight of a helmet, i.e., from about 22 months up.
