Bridgestone/SCORE Off-Road World Championship Wax wicks it at Riverside By Mark Kariya Photos by Charles Morey and Kariya RlVERSIDE, CA, AUG. 9 Mark "Wax" Weixeldorfer, winner of the SCORE Baja Intemacional ATC class with American Honda teammate Dean Sundahl, F made it two major wins in a row as he grabbed the Class 3-Wheeler II (250cc) and overall laurels at Riverside International Raceway's Bridgestone/SCORE Off-Road World Championship. Sundahl made him work for the lead in the first half of the race as they swapped the point position back and forth, but settled for second overall, first Class g-Wheeler III (Open) on a prototype ATCg50R, basically a 250 with a bigger top end ..... built specially for this race ... Nicholson Racing Honda-mounted Curtis Sparks topped Class g- Wheeler I (200cc) on his ATC185S after early class leader Tracey Dickson DNF in the late going with a reported broken front end on his Dickson Design & Development Yamaha YT125 Tri-Moto fitted with a screaming YZ125H watercooled motocross engine. The race marked yet another milestone in both three-wheeler and SCORE competition as it was the first time three-wheelers have competed at SCORE's Riverside event and the first time that there has been more than a single three-wheeler class in a SCORE race. In previous SCORE races, the ATC class was an anything-goes affair, and the entrants chose Honda ATC250Rs. In order to ensure competitiveness of riders choosing other brands and/or models of trikes, the three-class format was chosen for this race. The purse promised to be the largest to date for three-wheelers. American Honda posted a $2250 cash bonus to Honda riders in all three classes, Yamaha put up $1400, and there was a 50% cash payback on entries which totaled 57. In addition, the race was run 'just before the Pepsi Challenge of Champions race for Class I (unlimited single-seat) cars and the Heavy Metal Challenge for Class 8 trucks, ensuring good exposure to a sizeable crowd. Run on the same 1.5-mile course as the four-wheelers and bikes, Classs II and III started in the first wave, Class I taking off in a second wave moments later. As they headed toward the first turn which was preceeded by a ditch, one of the lead riders apparently neglected to shut off and tumbled heavily which put him out of the race, starting
