Don Dodge paced Expen time trials with a 14.75-second clocking. Hurst was right behind with a time of 14.78. Jeff Campbell took the fmal Expert heat pole position at 14.82, and Frank Word 111 took his Harley-Davidson around for the final trophy dash spot with a 14.87. The west coast's top Junior, Californian Billy Scott, set fast time with a 15.08 inJunior trials. Mike Thompson was next at 15.15. Randy Patterson followed with a 15.18. Arney Wick picked up the final pole and trophy dash spot at 15.22. The Novice heat winners - Bart Nelson, Jeff Hardan, Randy Green and Barry Pelkey - made up the Novice' dash lineup. Once again the win went to the Sidewinders and Region point leader, Washington racer Randy Green on a Honda. With one rider scratching, Sidewinder's point leader Kirk Strong took his position in the Junior dash. Strong led all three laps over Scott to take the win. The Expen trophy dash was a wireto-wire wm for the Harley-Davidson of Frank Word. There was no surprise on the start of the Novice main event. Green and his Honda set the pace again over Hardan, Pelkey, Mike Scott and Brian Yocum. Green staned to really open up a lead as the pack got pretty bunched behind. On lap four, Green made a big mistake and slid out exiting tum four. Hardan took over the lead with Pelkey second over Yocum, Scott and Mark Williaman who had wOrked his way up through the pack. Pelkey made the pass for the .lead coming down the hill and staned opening up the lead on lap five. Hardan was really being pressured by Yocum and Williaman for second. On lap seven, Hardan's bike seized, and Yocum took over second. He wouldn't hold it for long as Williaman made the pass the next lap. They were set to the finish with Pelkey taking his fmt Pro win over Williaman, Yocum, Duane Gerrard and Scott. The Junior main was a thrill-packed event. On the green, it was Thompson on his Triumph to the comer first over Scott's Yamaha, Ron Yamamoto, Patterson, and Strong's Honda. Thompson opened a pretty decent lead after the first lap. Scott was second over Strong who worked up to third. They held positions till lap five when Strong was able to get by. Scott for second down the hill. Patterson had now worked past Yamamoto for fooM. Strong set out after Thompson, finally getting by for the lead on lap seven. Strong opened up a good cushion by lap 10 as Scott started pressuring Thompson for second. On the final lap, Scott really went for it coming down the hill and made an inside pass on Thompson for second. Scott was barely able to hold on ~ he nailed the wall down the straight and kicked his bike into neutral, but he held on for second behind Strong. Thompson was third, Patterson fourth and Yama, motoflfth. Now the stage was set for the 20-lap EJtpen main event. Hurst on his KRW I Messeler/Panther Racing Frames Triuph was off with the lead into the first comer followed closely by Word; Jeff McDaniel was third over Jeff Campbell, Jeff Celorie and Bret Barkman. Hurst, the master of the outside line, and Word, who can really throw his Harley around on the inside, battled throujthout lap six. Word then started to fade. Hurst was' now home free and opened up a substantial lead over McDaniel and Campbell. Word pulled off on lap eight. At the halfway mark, it was Hurst, McDaniel, Campbell, Barkman and Celorie. Campbell was able to get under McDaniel for second on lap 12. That's the way the final rundown'would be: Hurst, Campbell, McDaniel, Barkman, Celorie, and Gary Davis in sixth. • Results NOV: 1.
