. . . Northern Californi.Northern Nevada·Oregon-Washington-ldaho·Utah-AI Racing Yam 575) were scrambling forpoints in an effort to break their' mid· season deadlock. Vallerga jumped out to an early lead in his race, 600cc Super· street. But Chuck McAvoy, on his im· maculate Dick Mann·framed Honda XL~OO, wasn't payin, muc~ respect to Louis. Suddenly, Bnan TI1seth (East Bay Yam 550) passed both of them, McAvoy passed Vallerga, and Louis had to settle for third place. Later in the day, Graves had problems with Howard Monise in the 450cc Production contest. Howard stayed close, but couldn't quite catch Kirk. "Ran outta tire - I need wider tires. The bike popped out of fourth gear every time. I was better on the brakes than he (Graves) was," remarked a frustrated Monise. And Graves was concerned. "I'll just have to go faster next time. I blew it going into 11. On the first lap I was looking back and was so busy looking I almost ran into the dirt in (tum) seven." Tracy DeMuro (Encino Cycle/ND Yam 550) kept his john Lassak·prepared mount ahead of Tom Maggard (Yam RD400) to stay in the hunt for the Number One plate. As mentioned a few weeks ago, the 1981 550cc street bikes have trans· formed the 600cc Production and Box Stock classes into Kawasaki GPz/ Yamaha Seca benefits. The AFM reo sponded to requests by the singlecylinder crowd to hold one more race, this one for thumpers only. As race director Duncan Blake explained, "There was desire to have their race because their bikes aren't competitive. In the past it seemed as though some people weren't listening .. ". I had enough guys to get another race for them." Blake said that besides the thumper race (won by Chuck McAvoy), next meet will have thumpers in one wave and four-stroke twins in another. Mike johnson, a longtime AFMer, announced that his shop, East Bay Yamaha in San Leandro, will have eight Yamaha RD550LCs for sale as soon as they arrive from Holland. And finally, the name of the place has reverted back to its original name, Sears Point. This was one of the many changes instituted by the new owners - jack Williams, Rick Betz and Clark Marshall. The trio purchased the 155acre facility for "comfortably under a million dollars," stated Williams. "We've started cleaning weeds and generally cleaning up,- but it's not going to happen overnight. That's going to take up about a year. Next is upgrading the motocross course." Williams is no stranger to the track, having been general manager in 197778 under president Lee Moselle, now at Laguna Seca. The new owners also patched turns one, 10 and 11, besides filling the "craters in the paddock." Williams said that the paddock will be entirely repaved by mid·September. The next Sears Point race will be August 8-9, the annual Golden Gate Challenae. August SO marks the seventh race of the year at the track, with action switching to Laguna Seca on September ~7. .
