One Randy Bird. Bird lasted only
until the final lap, however, when
similar problems gave the runner-up
trophy to Greg Nelson. Shawn Pettis is
getting used to his new Yamaha and
swooped into fourth when Bird went
out. Jimmy Snow rounded out the top
five.
The 250cc Novices were split up into
two heats with Jeff Runyan and Bob
Gabler grabbing the transfers from
heat number one, and Lee Lindquist
(congrats) and Archie Perez making
the final from heat two. Ward McKee
won the semi aboard his new Knight
Kawasaki, then took third behind
Gabler and Perez in the l2-lap finaL
McKee took over second place with
four laps to go, but lost it again to
Perez on the last go 'round. Runyan
and Jim Stentz finished up four/five.
These guys are going to try to throw
another race or two, providing they
didn't lose too much money, including
a short track at Ascot. The track condition at Saddleback was the best seen
there for a short track, with a smooth,
dust-free, wide blue groove proving
that racers themselves do indeed know
how to run a show. A little more support for the next one, and maybe we
can help get southern California back
to the Class C capitol it once was.
