The pits were stuffed and the
grandstands were filled to capacity for one of the largest turnouts
ever for Thursday night racing
at Orange County International Raceway. With well over 200 riden, victory
meant something special. Todd Peterson scored in both the 125 and 250cc
Pro classes, and Greg Zitterkopf fin·
ished on top in Open Pro.
The tightest of the Pro classes was
the 1251. In the first mota Rich Collins
put his Suzuki in the lead off the line.
Petenem was second with Pro newcomer
Vince McMahon third. Harley Hall
was fourth and maintained the
pressure on McMahon but could not
~t by. Collins stayed out of Peterson's
reach most of the race, but Peterson
fmany caught him with two laps left.
In the second moto Peterson got a
slight holemot with Collins right behind. Randy Skinner started in third
with Hall fourth. McMahon had a
poor start and was stuck back in the
pack. Collins did his best to stay close
to the DC Yamaha of Peterson but
never got close enough to be a threat.
Hall took most of the race to ~t
around Skinner to finish third.
After two weeks of knock-down,
drag-out battles in the 125cc Intermediates, everyone was ready for
round three of the Thiebert/Marcell
series. Taylor Marcell put his Team
Green machine in the lead. Chris
Heinrich was second out of the gate
with Bill Thiebert third. Marcell was
opening up his lead while Heinrich
was holding off Thiebert. On the third
lap Thiebert was able to overtake Heinrich for second and set out after
Marcell. It took most of the remaining
time for Thiebert to ~t close. He had
one shot at the lead on the last lap, but
Marcell held him off for the win.
In the second moto John Begin took
the holeshot with Thiebert right behind.
Marcell tried to cut it too close at the
fint tum and crashed into the tires
marking the course. He was up fairly
quickly but in his haste to catch up, he
went down again on the tint lap. Heinrich was third and close to the leaders.
Begin held off Thiebert all the way but
found himself disqualified for making
a dan~rous pass in the pro whoop-dedoo section during a yellow flag.
Either way the overall win went to
Thiebert. Marcell could only mana~
a fifth after his fint lap troubles. Second overall went to Heinrich.
Paul Pontius led U5cc Novice Division I clash for all but one lap in the
fint moto. Vic Lohr, just recovered
from a bout with chickenpox, took the
holeshot and held on for the tint lap
until Pontius went by. Eric Bellwood
was a solid third. In the second moto it
was Pontius all the way aboard his
Suzuki.

ROSEAMOND, CA,JULY 12
For Honda, Yamaha & Suzuki
It was another hot day at Willow
Springs International Raceway
as the American Road Racing
Association held a double-points
Part No.
4M-3200
By Lori Tyson
race, their last scheduled race until
September.
The fint race, 600-9OOcc and Open
Four-Stroke GP, was the Jim LaBine
Show. Riding a 600cc c1ass bike, he
took an early lead and held the
number one .spot throughout the 10
lapper, beating even the Open class
bikes by a half lap. Back in the pack
there was a good race going on between
Terry Nelson (in the Open class) and
Bob Parr (in the 900cc class), with
both taking second in their respective
classes.
The 250cc GP race showed Dave
Emde (with a pretty new paint job on
his Bob Endicott TZ) and Todd Brown
(also on a TZ) fighting for the lead
until David put it in "Hyperdrive" and
was gone, leaving Todd to dice with
Leland Hancock and Curt Maddox,
who were having a battle of their own.
Dave got the number one trophy but
behind him, after a very close race,
Brown took second, and Hancock was
third with Maddox not too far behind.
[n the 600cc Production run Steve
Sowden and John Ulrich battled for
the lead, both on GPz550s. Sowden
look home the top trophy in this one,
with John second. But in the 600cc
Box Stock race, Cycle World's Ulrich
(sponsored by Champion Motorcycles)
showed his distaste for the number two
spot by taking the win with a fast lap
time of 1:42.06. Sowden had to settle
for second this time, with Boots Langley
right behind them in both runs.
Dave Behrendt (lJIOI*Xed by Pacific
Sportcycles) played "King Kenny" in
the 450cc Production race, toying with
Clint Whitehouse and Jeff Braucht;
kicking back and letting them lead
until he decided to take over in the
very last lap to take the win.
In the 75Occ.Super Street race Allen
Grilles had an early lead until Rob
Radel, on a oouowed 55OGPz, decided
(after blowing his engine in the 900cc
Four-Stroke GP) he didn't want to go
home empty handed and took the lead
for the rest of the race.
Dusty Behrman took his fint lOllS of
the year in the lOOcc GP when newcomer Joe Miller, in his fl1'llt road race,
pulled a Wayne Rainey and took the
win with flair.
