C') ORANGE COUNTY'S LARGEST DIRT BIKE HEADQUARTERS Top S8dd1ebeck ~ track money winner Pete Hames 1122E11eeda the field. One Randy Bird. Bird lasted only until the final lap, however, when similar problems gave the runner-up trophy to Greg Nelson. Shawn Pettis is getting used to his new Yamaha and swooped into fourth when Bird went out. Jimmy Snow rounded out the top five. The 250cc Novices were split up into two heats with Jeff Runyan and Bob Gabler grabbing the transfers from heat number one, and Lee Lindquist (congrats) and Archie Perez making the final from heat two. Ward McKee won the semi aboard his new Knight Kawasaki, then took third behind Gabler and Perez in the l2-lap finaL McKee took over second place with four laps to go, but lost it again to Perez on the last go 'round. Runyan and Jim Stentz finished up four/five. These guys are going to try to throw another race or two, providing they didn't lose too much money, including a short track at Ascot. The track condition at Saddleback was the best seen there for a short track, with a smooth, dust-free, wide blue groove proving that racers themselves do indeed know how to run a show. A little more support for the next one, and maybe we can help get southern California back to the Class C capitol it once was. Results MINI COMB: 1. Mike Kirby (Ex); 2. lIrT'I*ln; 3. Jim BannIng tops 250cc Pros at Saturday Saddleback By Terry Whytel ORANGE, CA,jULY 11 Wheelsmith Maico rider Steve Banning traded moto wins with Yamaha-mounted Greg Zitterkopf in 250cc Pro action at this week's SSM MX. Banning's second moto win proved to be the tie-breaker and gave the young Maico pilot the overall victory. In race one, it was Zitterkopf in control at the checkers with Banning crossing the line in second. Behind the battle for first place, Husky rider Troy Lee, Yamaha-mounted Fred Combs and Wayne Reid, also riding a Yamaha, dueled for the third place finishing position. At the flag, Lee grabbed third ahead of Combs and Reid. Banning found his stride in moto two and took command of the race as Zitterkopf moved into second. Lee kept his Pro·Circuit Husky within striking distance of the leaders but settled for third at the finish to take home the third place money behind Banning and Zitterkopf. Rich Mannschrek picked up the fourth place share of the purse With a fine second moto ride on his Yamaha, and Kawasaki rider W.J. Bradbury rounded out the top five. Anaheim Husky rider Bill Keefe dominated the first round of Open Pro action leaving Suzuki rider Scott Cav· ness to pick up second at the checkers. Moto two ended on lap three for Keefe as his rear tire went flat and he headed for the pits. Cavness turned the throttle a notch higher on his Anaheim Suzuki-prepared 465 and ran away with the moto.
