Phil Harmetluk quickly checks on where the rest of Third Division Is. (COfIlinuedjrom page 30) race got underway. Bast. on the Justice Brothers Jawa. outgated 7-Up's Gene Woods. who had to borrow Bast's backup bike, Christian on the STP Jawa and 17-year-old Lance King on the Wide West Stores/Off Shore Weslake. King moved from founh to second when he ducked under Christian and Woods in tum two on the first lap. Christian's bike had motor problems at the end of lap one which elmininated him from any hopes of winning the main. King was able to open up a wide advantage on third place Woods but was unable to catch Bast as the multi-time National Champion rolled to his third IMS Scratch main victory of the season. . King came from the 50 and for the second week in a row. captured the Handicap main. John Foster took the lead from the llO on the start over Gary Ford and Danny Becker. Ford tried to move Foster to the outside in turn one with Foster holding his ground and leading down the back chute. Ford did a wheelie coming off tum four causing Foster to slow to avoid hitting the defendinl{ Canadian champion and letting Ford take the lead at the end of the lap. Becker. encountered mechanical problems and dropped out near the end oflap one. King got by Foster in the second comer on lap two and moved by Ford on lap three for the lead. Ford stayed a close second the rest of the way followed by Bast. who edged Foster for third. with Becker fifth and Mike Curoso, who was unable to stan after re-injuring his foot. getting credit for sixth. . Craig DePhillippi took the lead from the zero on the stan and led all the way to gain his first Second Division main event victory of the season at IMS. The original go was red-flagged on the second lap as Don Bovee and Ron Blanton decided to check the strength of the tum one crashwall. Both.riders were flagged off for causing the red flag. De Phillippi got the lead on the restart over Andy Northrup and Ed Thurman. Thurman got by Nonhrup for second in tum two with Nonhrup falling in the same comer on lap two while running third. Sixteen-year-old Chris Hedge got inside Thurman in an attempt to take over ·the number two and we're running out of adjectives to describe him. Lance King won his seventh Scratch main here in 11 tries and also came within inches of winning the Handicap main as well. Eddie Ingela, visiting from the Bay area. took the Handicap trophy off the llO-yard line (he's off the 50 up nonh). It was Beer Night at the Ventura Raceway. and legions of staggering elbow-benders showed up early to pour their weight in ll5~ beer down their necks. For those on the wagon and motorcycles, Bob Pfetzing made his long-awaited First Division debut. Quite possibly the Rookie-of-the-Year. Pfetzing looked great as he held the lead for the first lap of the first race, then crashed. He'll get another chance next week to improve his stash of trophies to seven. Preceding Pfetzing into the Big Time was two-week 0-1 veteran Chris Hedge. who won his first heat, crashed in the semi, then came back to win the Handicap consy. Ingela. from beautiful downtown Pinole, won but one of his Handicap rides, but showed the good sense to save the best for last. In the main, Insela got underneath and passed low- . yardage riders Shane Hawley and Greg Ayen by the second tum. King freed himlelf from the pack on the third lap and passed Shawn McConnell to slide into second. On the last lap, King made up about 50 feet on the back. Itraightaway. and suddenly Ingela' big lead was shaky. King came charging around tum four, but his fmal drive came up half a wheel shon of catching Insela at the line. In Scratch racing. King was. once apin. unbeaten. After an easy win in his beat race. King was outgated by Mike Curoso and trailing ~ter three laps of the semi. In tum two. Curoso went too wide. and King shot u~der him to take the lead. Steve Lucero. 01 up here (all the way) and looking better each week. passed Curoso on the last lap to take second. In the Scratch main. King staned in the founh lane. went around Bobby McLain in the second tum and cruised to another easy win. A masterful performer on the outside. King rides without the electricity of Fishback. but with the same results as Mike Bast. The kid is completely dominating Ventura. In Second Division racing. Mike Mazzacane was the winning survivor of a crash-filled heat race, then came back to win the main, making his initial jump from Third Division a success. Pat Hawley came out with a beer can glued to the top of his helmet in honor of Beer Night. but it didn.'t help him win. Nice touch, anyway. In Third Division racing. Andy Nonhrup looked ready to move up to D-ll as he won the 0·5 main for the second time. John Aitken of Santa Paula was taken to the hospital with a reponedly broken ankle. suffered in a three-rider pileup. JUNE ll4 It was rerun night at John La Douceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway Wednesday as Mike' Bast, Lance King and Cliff Cody won their main events for the second week In a row. In the Scratch main. Bast drew the pole which he kiddingly offered to trade to Alan Christian. who had drawn the number position before the spot. Thurman drifted high in tum four on the third lap and fell in the cushion. Thurman got back on but was now a distant third. Hedge had second all wrapped up when his motor died as he was headed for the white flag giving second back to Thurman. DePhillippi took a well deserved (he was the only rider who didn't encounter any prob1ems) half-lap victory over Thurman, ljIedge, Nonhrup, Bovee and Blanton. Cody. coming from the 10. devasted the field to make it two Third Division mains in a row and earn a trip to the llO-yard line .or Second Division. Mark Rotondo took command on the stan over Ken Bencheck and Mike Manacane. who earlier in the evening came in as a reserve rider. Bentley Barrett quickly eliminated himself as he hit the din in tum one on the opening circuit. Cody blasted by Mazzacane and Bencheck and looked like a runaway freight train as he passed Rotondo for the lead in tum two on lap two. Cody had the race all to himlelf in the remaining lap and a half. Rotondo went down in turn one on lap four and was calmly walking off the track when the checkered fell for the rest of the pack. Bencheck and Baron Bibee, still not completely slowed down, came face to face with Rotondo who was on foot. Rotondo showed a fancy·move to avoid being hit then calmy walked back to the pits as Bencheck and Bibee piled into the tum·two crashwall. Neither rider was injured. Following Cody were Mazzacane. Bibee, Benched, Barrett and Rotondo. Jordan Duncan led the entire distance to win his' third Junior Speedway main of the season at IMS.
