June 20Four out of the five BMWs -starting the "Battle of the Twins" swept to First Place wins in America's oldest motorcyde race -the 58th Annual Laconia Classictoday. Decisively winning the Grand Prix by a good half lap at the finish in a torrential downpour, David Emde of California rode a bike sponsored by San Jose BMW, Emde-who took the R65 64 lead from the start, widened it throughout and dearly provided '''the dass of the race"-was obviously up for th~ event, afterwards commenting to the press that he felt the bike he was riding was a perfect combination for the weather and the track. The other Firsts registered by BMWs went to John Long for Modified Production Expert, Bill Atkinson for Modified Production Amateur-both R80G/S RlOO RIOOCS RlOORS sponsored by Bavarian Cyde Center of Skowhegan, Maine. And to Devin Battley from Annandale, Virginia, for Stock Production Class. The downpour dampened everything except the shouts of BMW fans in the stands here at this National Championship Series event in Loudon, New Hampshire when Emde, the dear victor, pulled a wheelie for the full length of the final straightaway.
