Bransford stretches Costa Mesa streak By Ken Kellogg ...... 00 en ...... COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE 26 Dennis Bransford did it again. For the third week in a row, Bransford won the First Division main event at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Not bad for a rider who not too long ago was only an upcoming Second Division rider. It was also a special night for John Foster, another fairly new Fint Division rider. He rode his first Scratch main ever. Congratulations. The Third Division main event was quite a crowd pleaser as Ed Castro, trailing off and on during the race, made his final plunge on the last lap in the last tum. At the tapes, he edged out Don Bovee who had been in fint place since the second lap. Finishing third was Phil Harmatiuk, founh was Bob Kellam, fifth was Shane McDonald and rounding out a large field was Mike Jones. In the Division Two main event, Steve Lucero defeated the field with a fabulous ride, coming from way back . on the 40-yard line. Lucero slowly worked his way through traffic, ,passing at least one rider on every lap, until he had first place cinched up. Finishing second was another back yardage rider, Bob Pfetzing. who also worked his way through traffic. but had to settle for second behind Lucero. Finishing third was last week's winner Alan Davidson, and fourth was Andy Northrup. One of the best races of the night is ,always the Division One Handicap consolation. The biggest pan of the race was decided right away. Steve Columbo was in first place on lap one and that's exactly where he finished. Beginning in second place, but having trouble was Craig Schaefer who finished fifth. John Sandona worked his way past the field and into second which he had to settle for. In fourth place for most of the race was Charlie Morley who managed to finish third. Dubb Ferrell was a disappointing fourth. The Handicap main event. featured regular winner (watch out, here comes the 20-yard line) Dennis Bransford who led from stan to finish. At the tapes, he was five-bike lengths in fro'nt. Taking second was Jim Lawson who gained on Bransford on laps two and three. However, after that, Bransford was out of reach. Gene Woods tried everything possible to take the win except ride on the fence as he moved from fifth to a close third place. Tom Hughes placed fourth after Woods passed him on the third lap. The Scratch main event found Lance King in lane one, first timer John Foster in lane two, John Sandona in lane three and Mike Bast far to the outside. When the gate went up. Bast , seemed to be in turn one before anyone realized the gate had gone up and led from start to finish. King went into turn one behind Bast and battled with Sandona. On the third lap. Sandona edged out in front of King, but Lance took it right back and finished second. Results • SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Mike Boot; 2. lllnco King; 3. John SondonI; 4. John Footer. HANDICAP MAIN: 1.
