is to
ow
delicately·sculptured dunes as play·
things: ramps to launch him and his
machine to higher and higher levels of
fun. They were made for him to enjoy,
to ride their bowls like a circus dare·
devil. to issue his full-throttle challenge
to unclimbable walls, to experience the
sw~t rush of fr~fall as he drops over
the edge of a near-vertical IOO-footer.
And it's joy without guilt. Within
five minutes after his passing, the sea
breeze will have swept his path clean in
iu perpetual moving of the mountains,
several grains at a time. It's what we
motorcycle trail riders know of our
spo": that the biu of eanh we disturb
are insignificant cOmpared to the
natural erosion process that's ~n rearranging our planet's face for eons.
At Pismo, it's reassuring to see the "big
eraser" at work, constantly changing
not only our traces but also whatever it
is that the environmental extremisu
are naively trying to "save."
There is one catch to this three·
wh~led fantasyland, however: Threewh~lers are not difficult to ride, but
they're not motorcycles, eitherl
