pass on Anderson for the start of a hot race. Anderson repassed Sun to take over the lead and held it for the remaining seven laps. Sun settled into second while Michlitseh rode to third. Kuest picked up a fourth while Kevin jansen (Kawasaki support) got fifth. The second 250cc go 'round saw "Sun·shine" all the way as Ron pulled into the lead off the line and was never passed. Barney Newman (Gresham Suzuki) got a very good stan, fourth into the.first lap, and by lap three had gone into second. Kuest dropped to third. Robb Manning (Bellevue Suzuki) was in the hunt this moto and wired it to fourth and the same overall. jansen finisehd fifth twice for third overall. The Open Pro class hit the line with 23 riders and Ron Sun again wired it to the flag. The chase was between Larry Hooper (Mai) and Montey Mitchell (Mai). Mitch Kirkpatrick (Hus) was in the thick of things for a couple of laps until he tired a bit and let some riders by. Arne Hettman (Newberg Honda) rode to a respectable fourth-place finish in front of John Christian of Steve's Yamaha. Open class moto two saw Mitchell get the holeshot. He held it for a lap and a half until Sun made the pass to stay to the wire. Montey held second for two more laps until he got passed by Hooper who went to the flag behind Sun. The day was spectacular. Five hundred and thirteen riders signed up with over 100 Pros turning out for the largest single rider turnout ever at Washougal. The series moves to Mulkey ORV Park in McMinnville, OR on May 17. ..... 00 ..... 0') Results OPEN PRO: I. Ran Sun 11fan): 2. lArry ~ lMIiI: 3. Mant8y M_IMoI1. 250 PRO: I. Ran Sun 1Hanl: 2. Kuest and Ron Sun grab Yamaha Gold (Cup) at Washougal ByAetionOl WASHOUGAL, WA, MAY 10 The Yamaha Perpetual Gold Cup motocross series paid a visit to Washougal's MX park and the largest rider turnout helped 30 make it a success. Gary Kuest copped the 125cc Pro bucks while Honda rider Ron Sun won three out of four motos for the 250 and Open Pro wins. The day had to be a big disappointment for the Northwest's jim Anderson. The first 125cc Pro moto was a dog fight. Anderson (Yamaha support) has to be labeled one of the top 125cc riders the Northwest has ever seen. The battle to the flag between himself and George Holland (Suzuki R lit D) was monumental. Holland got the holeshot off the line with jeff Cropper (Suz) right behind into the second tum. Anderson was laying sixth into the third tum but by lap's end, he was on Cropper's rear knobby. Brent Trmlblay (Suz) hung in for a train ride and the hook-up was a tango. By lap four, Anderson had made his pass on Cropper. Holland.had a 15· second lead, and the locals all felt. given enough time, Anderson might be able to overhaul him. Meanwhile, Gary Kuest (Airway Heights Yamaha) had pushed himself into the founh· place position and was able to hold it to the flag. Kuest rode like the wind on a track that was not all that familiar to him. Anderson needed two more laps that he didn't have to make the pass, if Holland would let him. Holland main· tained for first, Anderson got second, Cropper third, Kuest fourth and Trmlblay fIfth. Everyone thought that it would be between Holland and Anderson based on the first moto. After all, this was the Yamaha Gold Cup; a substantial purse was at stake. The stadium gate dropped. A roar filled the tall firs surrounding the staning area and the point of 40 riders came around the fint tum. Riders went down, but you weren't able to tell who. The question was answered when the traffic cleared. Anderson was down and very slow get· ting up. That put him out of the race, and after the medics examined him. they found a broken collarbone. Huge bummerl On the track, it was a new ball game. Holland sat in 16th place after a lousy start. Eric Hall (Yamaha support/LOP) took off like a heatseeking missile followed by Don Gores (Olympic Yamaha) who tried again and again to pass. Hall led it for two laps before Rowdy Blasdell (Gresham Suzuki) pushed his pumper to the lead in a dynamite explosion on the long uphill. Hall regained the second spot on lap four and was never bothered after. Hall is a definite future threat for bigger and better things. He's only been riding Pro for one season and is already a consistent top place finisher. At the end of moto two It was Blasdell one (he didn't fmish moto one), Hall two (for a sixth overall), Gores three (for a 10th overall). Ross Learn, on a Suzuki from Spokane, was fourth this moto as well as overall. Kuest picked up a solid fifth putting him first overall with two consistent finishes. Thirty·nine 250cc Pros strained at the gate for the start of their first moto. Into the first tum was Anderson. Right next to him was Tim Michlitseh on a Kawasaki from New· berg, OR. Ron Sun (Honda support) was third while Kuest held founh. At the end of the first lap, the order held, but by lap two, Sun worked a V _ lV."l; 3. JIIcque LMDeIK8wI. PEE WEE: 1. Flick ~ lV."l; 2. Boyles romps at LodlST ByAnnCerr Lom, CA, MAY 2 Eighteen-year-old David Boyles, hot off several successful runs at Ascot in the NoVice Pro ranks (one win, one second, two thirds), dialed the 500cc Expert start and took his third consecutive main event in the Lodi Cycle Bowl spring short track series. Since climbing aboard the Spinetti's of jackson/Terry Sage 500cc machine, David has been nearly unstoppable. Redding's Pat Siegle and joe Knight grabbed the other 500cc payoff spots. In the 250cc Expert run, Mark Key's McGill Yamaha nailed the start and held Boyles off for a wire-to-wire win. Mark, also faring well at Ascot this year, is an excellent groove rider as he and David charged stDoothly into
