:anada- Northern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utah-A every comer with no mistakes. Joe Knight ripped off his second thirdplace payoff of the night in a close battle with new Expert Aaron Hill. The evening's largest class sported 17 250cc Juniors. Chris Carr survived a Steve Mitchell getoff (while leading through turns one and two), slipped his Jorgy's/Boss/ND-sparked Can-Am inside of Frank Sanchez in tum four and then stretched to the win. Sanchez remained in second while Greg Gray charged through the pack for third. Other sportsman action featured wins by Shawn Reyna (250cc Novice), John Lamont (500cc Novice), Doug Mignano (500ccJunior), Robert Curry (125cc combined) and old timer John McGill (200cc Novice) with only the 500ccJunior go a close one. Mini action continued hot with Mike Macedo taking his third main win over Winkie Freitas and Scott Casey in the 80cc Expert main while Winllie easily nabbed the 100cc fray over Kelly Fischer. Junior Ted Taylor received his toughest challenge thus far from Shad Johnson but held on to win the combined 80cc race. Short track racing continues every Saturday night through June at Lodi with the annual Archie Clark Benefit scheduled for Saturday night, May 23. Results iii NOV/JR: I. Ted ToyIor; 2. Rich Moore (Kaw) held onto second in his class over Dan Stoneburg (Yam) and Bill Row (Yam). Second time out, Hise didn't take any chances of getting- caught in the dust going for the holeshot. About halfway through the race, second-place rider Rich Moore (Kaw) went over a comer and crashed into a pole holding up the tower which sent him over the bars and kept the tower rocking, much to everyone's surprise. That put Bill Row (Yam) in second and Stoneburg third. Hise took the win as did Smothers in the Intermediate class. The largest class was l25cc Novice. At nearly 20 riders, the spectators were set for some close racing. Rick Mart (Suz) dashed to the front of the pack as thev came into the barrel tum followed by high point overall winner Rick Gunderson (Suz), Lindy Marsh (Suz) and Greeg Freese (Yam of Springfield). Gunderson displaced Mart and kept up the pace to the flag with Marsh, Freese, Larry Brumwell (Yam) and Karl Riter (Yam) following. Moto two saw Gunderson penalized for jumping the gun but being turned around didn't slow him down any as he went quickly to the front of the pack after a brief encounter with Marsh. A race that usually goes unmentioned is the 30-40 class. Today it was unusually large. Bill Row (Yam of Springfield) went to a double moto blitz over Skip Cox (KTM) of Creswell, OR who went 2-2 keeping close tabs on Row. Third was Ted Miller (Kaw) with his 3-3. But that's where consistency ended. Fourth with a 7-4 was Dave Kris (Hon) of Philomath, OR and Charlie Harter's (Four Seasons Mai) 4-11. Results Mise hauls at EugeneMX Championship By Suanne Ught EUGENE, OR, MAY 10 This was the big finale, the E.R.A.lPro-AM Williamette Valley Beverage-sponsored Eugene, Oregon State Championship Motocross race. Over 200 riders showed up on this sunny Mother's Day in May. Amateurs showed up in hordes, but the Pro turnout was down due to a iarge purse up north. The racing was still excellent and fulfilled everyone's needs. The best race of the day would have to have been the 125cc Intermediatel Pro combined race. Terry Baker (Eugene Suz) took his brand new Floater to the lead followed by Duane Taylor (HoD), Mark Esterberg (Thiecn's/Yam), Doug Boody (Santiam Yam) and Pro Wayne Church (Valley Cycles Yam). Baker went fast but crashed hard letting Taylor by for good. Church eventually worked into second but couldn't get by Taylor. Moto two saw Baker holeshot again, but the pack stuck right to him. It could have been anyone's race, but coming out of the woods, Baker had a five-second lead over Taylor and Esterberg. Baker took the win over Taylor, Esterberg, Boddy, Church and Skeet Hise (Kaw). Taking the overall with a 1-2 was Taylor followed by Baker (4-1) and Esterberg (2-3). Church went I-I for the Pro overall followed by Hise's 2-2. In 250cc Intermediate/Pro racing, Hise flat out disappeared from the others but first had to work his way through the pack and the dust. Mike Smothers (Kaw) trailed Hise but not PEE WEE: I. Two In a row for Douglas at Winnemucca GP By Wretched Racer WINNEMUCCA, NV, APR. 26 Phil Douglas cruised his 490 Maico at warp speed to win the Third Ever Winnemucca/Coors AMA District 36 Grand Prix and not even the dust dimmed his smile. This is the second year in a row Douglas has won the Winnemucca GP. Although the eye-watering speed of his KTM 495 got Greg Martz to the smoke bomb fint, Douglas passed him to take the lead into the fint-lap home check. Mart kept within striking distance, and when Douglas pitted on lap six, Martz took over again. Martz's place in the sun was short-lived as Douglas again showed up at the seventhlap home check in front. And that was the situation for the rest of the nine 16mile laps. Third overall was 250cc Expert Charlie Halcomb, and Vet Experts 00 0') TEST REPORTS In CYCLE April 1981 RIDER March 1981 used exclUSively by CALIFORNIA SUPERBIKE SCHOOL Available through motorcycle dealers NATIONAL DISTRIBUTORS A.D.I..
