ActIon geta unclel_V et Mulkey with an unidentified Vamehe rider alon. In front. EgIi and Burgess soon pulled away from the otben, starting a battle which would last the entire moto. Everyone watched this battle until the fifth lap when something better came up. Villapoto and Vreech were in a heavy battle for third place, and neither rider was giving an inch. On a tricky downhill jump/off-camber combination, Creech's Yamaha connected with Villapoto's Maico, and as the two slid to a stop, neither rider appeared to be hun. But Creech's from fon lodged itself between Villapoto's sprocket and hub, and no amount of tugging could get them apan. You've probably seen this type of situation, where everyone has advice. Someone sugeted a tire iron, another bystander suggested letting the air out of both tires. while still another perIOn went so far as to suggest boiling waterl Finally. tbe bikes were separated, but the moto was already complete. While all this '!"as taking place. Burgess had passed Elgi with two laps to go. Egli placed second with Hise gelling third overall and fint 250. BurgCSII would later say. "I didn't \mow those things went that fast," when asked about Egli and the 125. The 250cc Intermediate Class was full of action as Rex Haskett pulled double moto wins, outriding Gary Bault who placed second. In the Old Timen, Springfield rider Bill Row was able to keep Elmer Riemer behind him both motos. Reimer was also able to keep Ed Frisbee behind him and in third. So fmally, the Winter Series has come to an end at Clarks Branch, but fear not, for the Summer Series starts in mid-May, and with a nice watering system and Ralph Huffman's log skidder and new Caterpiller, some great races are in store. OR, APR. 26 What looked like a real Sun family feud in both the 250 and Open Pro classes was brought to an end in both cases when Ron Sun had "one of those days." The Open Pros were the fmt to run and Ron immediately suffered what might have been an omen. He had about a wheel's edge coming around the fint tum. but brolher Chuck right beside him bobbled JUSI a tiny bit and clipped ~on's wheel. Ron ended up on tile ground while the pack went by. Phil Oveland (Yam) was out front for the fint loop followed by Chuck Sun (Hon) who was on the move. Ron was dead last. Up front. Chuck toyed with Oveland through the whole race while Ron tried to work up. Things went well until he bumped into the trio of Yamahas ridden by Tom Poage. john Christian and Barney Newman. For most of the moto, these four freight-trained around the coune before Ron picked off 'all three in the last two laps. By this time. the four had closed the gap on the ChuckOveland game, but it was too late for Ron. The next time out, Ron led the first lap and Chuck was there to dice wilh him. Chuck took the lead while Ron bounded him for half the moto before be looked down to discover a flat rear tire. It was game time again. Chuck would drop back to let Oveland pass and tben zap him time after time. In the last two laps. Chuck just pulled away with what seemed certain VIctOry. In the final IUrD. though, he dug his front wheel inlo the berm and did an upBide-down ba1let for an unbelievable length of time. What balance! Neither he nor the bike fell over, bUI he killed the engine, While he was kicking up the fire, Oveland went by for the win. The Sun battle continued in 250cc Pro, Chuck got the scratch, Ron took tbe lead. Chuck took it back and sudden1y Ron was out of the race with what was reponed to be traDDy ills. jim Anderson (Yam) took over the chase in second and. with a push from behind by Oveland. kept Chuck alen through the rei( of the race. David HeDden (Yam) led Chuck, Kelly Whelchel and Vince Warren (Yam) in the second round. Chuck took the lead after two laps, but Henden held onto second to tbe end while Anderson worked up from a lousy stan to finish third. Mike McCormick (Yam) led Eric Hall (Yam) and jack McGill (Yam) in the fmt 125cc Pro race. Halfway through the race. Hall took tbe lead and by this time jeff Cropper (Suz) had gone by Rowdy Blasdell (Suz) and McGill to let up his move on McCormick. He got by to hold second the last three laps. When round two staned, lim Anderson (Yam) had a lillie more normal stan. In the fint race. he'd ended up in a pile of bikes and bodies with Roy Davis. This time, he led all the way. Hall came out second and got quite a challenge from Dennis Ostriem (Yam) for several laps before Ostriem spun out in the upper sweeper. His bike was . reluctant to fire again and he threw in the towel. Cropper came through the ranks again for third abead of Rob Watilo (Yam) and Blasdell whose two fifths earned him third overall. Today was me tint appearance of the newly organized Oregon Over The Hill Gang. They showed up with 20 riden all bot to go. Ron Long (Suz) won both A motos: Gary Backstrom (Yam) did as well in the B group and jerry Anderson (Yam) was top Crider with a win and a second. Results PEE WEE JR: 1. ~ Sedowolty IV": 2. CA, APR. 26 A pilot program to try and bring IT scrambles back to life was attempted, successfully. at Hills Ferry Raceway with a fair turn· out of riden who liked the idea of a jump and right-hander. This district was famous for producing some of the finest racen in the COUnlry when all they had to ride was scrambles tracks such as Fremont, Lodi, Hayward, Uvas Meadows, Hollister, Belmont and Richmond. Despite a late stan and a really long practice session, the races were run rather well with only a few spectacular get·offs. Kelley Fischer won the lOOcc Expert main on his Yamaha of Salinas/ FISCher Const. special with the usual crew in tow or on the sidelines. jeff BinJ[bam' was tbe 80cc Novice winner witli Ted Taylor still dominating 80cc junior aDd Mike Roehlk in for second. Winkie Freitas completely dominated the 80cc Expen feature on his Del Callen-tuned Kawasa1ti of Salinas ~unt. As it turned out, the fint three bikes were all out of the Salinas Kawasaki shop of jim Chisum with Mike Macedo holding down fourth for McGill Yamaha. Tony Mitcbelltook tbe lOOccjunior class and it was Chris Carr again on tbe lOOcc machine that won both National titles last year taking the l25cc 'junior/Novice show. Only a matter of changing one number one plate from shon track to scrambles for the 10-time National title bolder. Chris Rudy brought in first place on the Rudy Areo Can-Am in 250cc Novice while Kevin Cisco did the number in the 250cc junior clais after P.J. Sanchez found himself out of control and in second. Aaron Hill, the newest of the 250cc Expen runners, led most of that Expen bash but made one little miscue and lit up the tire on his CR250R. Bruce johnson was right there for the pass to take the win on the Seaside Sports Cemer Yamaha. Behind the two leaden, it was a real bla$t with johnny Pillman, Scott Podergois and a large crew that lasted the entire event.. Former Mini Slar Danny Kirkeby found time off from road racing and won Open Novice over Ban Wiley while Robert "The Kid" Curry took tbe big junior win over Kelly Bennell. Keith Day's green and white TT!iOO were no match for the troops in today's 500cc Expen main despite a crash in the heat lhat looked just like dominoes. Keith rode around Mike Delacy on his NO-sparked Yamaha for the big win with Delacy fighting off Manrin Lewis without aid of appropriate tires. Lots of guys came with \mobs. but that wasn't the deal. The pilot program allowed for no front brakes if you didn't have them, but class "C"traction only. It was a good day of racing, District ~ style. Results 100 EX; 1. KoIIoy _lVom!. BO NOV: 1. Scroggins doubles at Hills Ferry ST By BUI Spencer NEWMAN, CA, APR. 25 Springtime racing in northern California is of the spotty nature and after last weekend's rain· outs, it looked bad just one week before the San jose Mile comes to town. Despite inclement weather, the troops were out at Hills Ferry Raceway for a night of abon track and, if tbe weather held, a little IT for Sunday_ It did and Craig Scroggins 011 tbe Glaze
