New aillo SaIa David Jones, Nick Cordova and Darren Rhoten led the charge at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch as race two of the Texas MX Championship Series saw an unprecedented (in Texas) SuzuIti sweep by these Dallas area riders of all three Expert c1asIes. The four· race Texas Series is really tightening up, with some of last week's Rio Bravo winnen having a rough day on the well manicured terrain of the sandy Whitney course. Yamaha sup' port riders Kirk Spencer and Jerry Surber, Jr., who had won the Open and 125cc opening TOunQs at Bravo, ended up founh and fifth overall in their respective c1aslles, while Nick Cordova (Suz) repeated as winner of the 250cc Expen division to sustain his drive for the State Championship. Of the over !l60 entries at Whitney. nobody was more pumped than 125cc Expen winner Davey Jones who drove his RM through. under and over the !lO-rider field to checker out fint in both motos. Jones took control at the staning gate in the fint race, setting aD uncatchable pace for the entire 12 laps. Randy Sullivan (Hon) staned well and ran second until the third lap when he dropped out completely leaving Louisiana's Scooter Stafford. Mark Rakestraw of Dallas and Kansas ace Randy Kirschbaum aboard the Yamaha train trailing the fleeing Jones. At the halfway point, Stafford stumbled and dropped in behind Rake· straw, Kirschbaum and Jerry Surber. Jr. (Yam) who had moved up to join the fun, and they finished in that order. The second moto was really a cTOwd pleaser as Jones had to battle from a 10th-place stan. Rakestraw, Kirschbaum and Surber were doing their thing out front. but Jones was tearing through the pack like a runaway chain saw. Kinchbaum, "The Mad Baumer," got the lead on lap two and gave it his all, but Jones reeled him in two comers bdore the white flag and &tuffed the Kansan into second place. Adding to Kirschbaum's misery was Stafford who had done some quick stepping b.imself and blasted Randy for accond a hundred feet from the finish line. With Jones the clear winner. Kirschbaum's !l-!l was good for second overall, followed by Rakestraw (2-4), Stafford (5-2) and Surber (4-5). Darrm Rhoten and Monte Andenon, who are both coming back from serious leg injuries, ga~ notice of . things to c:otnt: as they took first and accond overall off the top of an exciting set of Open Expen mOlOlS. Kirk Spen° cer (Yam) was left in the fint tum of moto one looking up at 25 riders roost away, but knowing that he could drop two of the eight series motos, he didn't panic, got up and rode in for a ninth. Rhoten. on the other hand, was definitely not writing off the moto. although he also staned way back in about 20th place. Debuting the new Thornfield·Skaggs Suzuki Floater. he ~ every one of his passing skills, acquired in the Pro SUperCTOlll races, to knock off place after place. Meanwhile, Rick French had gassed his CR450R Honda to a holnhot that stuck until lap seven when Monte Anderson (Yam) zapped him. Dennis Goodson (Hon), who had held second for four laps, crashed out and joined Nat Segovia (Yam) on the sidelines to watch Rhoten chase down Anderson. French, Chris Hipp (Yam) and Steve Mulholland (Yam). Rhoten got everybody but Anderson at the finish. setting the stage for the second moto which Rhoten took away &om stan to finish. This time. Spencer was out for a moto win, but could not open Rhoten's door. though he tried hard in the early going. French started in third but crashed on lap two and retired to load up for Longview. The next lap saw Anderson get by Hipp for third, a place he held to the end. Rhoten's 2-1 was top overall score, sec· ond went to Anderson at l·!l, Chris Hipp (!l-4) was third, and Spencer's 9· 2 was good for founh. Thiny·five 250cc Experts hit tum one of their IDOlO, and the Yamaha duo of Ricky Glaser and Kirk Spencer was out front, but series leader Nick Cordova (Suz) was right behind and pouring on the &team (can you pour the steam on an air-cooled bike?). Anyway. Mark Rakestraw (Yam), Craig Riddle (Kaw), and Chris Hipp (Hon) were crowding things in slou four-six rust
