o.ren Rhoten pulls the Open Expert hoIeshot lit Whitney's Texas lIeries race.
as the tremendous field raced the 12lapper until halfway when Riddle got
by Rakestraw fpr third, and Darren
Rhoten (Suz) moved into fifth as
. Glaser dropped out of action. With
three laps to go, Cordova was really
smokin' and nailed Spencer for the
lead to win the moto while Rhoten
took third in front of Riddle and
Rakestraw.
The 250cc fmal was again led off by
Yamahas ridden by Rakestraw, Rick
Blackwell and Dennis Hawthorne, but
again Cordova was right there in
fourth: By the fifth lap, he had moved
into second, but Rakestraw had pulled
an insurmountable lead and was not to
be caught this time. Cordova's 1-2
headed the overall standin~ followed
by Rakestraw .(5-1), Riddle (4-4),
Spencer (2-6), Randy Kirschbaum
(Yam, 7 -~) and Rhoten (~-8).
Keeping with Suzuki's upsu~ in
1981 motocross racing was Robby Wilson who dominated both 125cc Intermediate motOll to move into a challenging position in the series after his futh
at Rio Bravo. 250cc Novice Walter
MOIlS is leading his class on an RM250
after another overall win at Whitney,
as ·is 125cc Novice Troy Broussard.
Kevin Jacobs, in his first effort on a
250, took his new Floater to victory in
the "A" group of 250cc Novice.
Yamaha's reply to all this came in
the small bike, Intermediate and Over
~O divisions as YZ riders took wins in
nine Amateur c1aslIes. Some interesting
bouts are developing in the minibike
ranks as Senior class rivals Eddie
Vreeland and Billy Whitley bang
wheels and swap wins. Whitley won
the Whitney race, but we look for Vreeland to keep it WFO down to the last
lap at Oak Hill and Austin. Scott
Thomas took both Junior Mini races
today, but Blake Garland is hanging
very close with a string of seconds.
Troy Rapp has won both series raCe!
so far and looks like a sure bet in Over
~O Intermediate while Joe Smith is very
close with Honda-mounted Lee
DuBose after his Open Intermediate
win at Whitney. The 250cc Intermediate tUle is still up for grabs, but Bryan
Jackson's 1-1 today sets him up well for
the remaining two events.
After the races were over, Kirk
Spencer's dad Roy was taken to the
Whitney hospital suffering from what
Texas Emergency Service personnel
described as a mild stroke. Mr. Spencer
was examined and released and will
probably be operating at three-quarter
throttle for a while, which is still more
than most of us can handle.

Round three of the Black Jack
Enduro Circuit combined with a
AMA (Region 5) Regional Enduro at Camp Gruber outside of
Muskogee for a real fme race. The
Tulsa Trail Riders sponsored the event
run on government land. This is one of
the few areas set up as a ORV park.
The trail was ~5 miles long and run
twice. This made for a rather short
enduro and some riders felt three loops
would have been more challenging. A
24-mph speed average keep most
riders on the gas which, combined
with small resets, left little time to rest.
The Tulsa Trail Riders did a good job
of running the event; they marked the
trail well and had few complaints.
In the AA class, Yamaha rider David
Fogle flew around the course dropping
14 points. David has just moved into
the AA class this year from the 200cc
A class. Right behind Fogel was Chuck
Cooper on a Kawasaki 250. Chuck
rides for Cooper Cycles and his threeman team, including brother Ralph,
won the team trophy. Ralph won the
200cc A class with 19 points; he has
dominated this class so far this year.
The lowest B score was turned in by
Texan Mike Collins on a Can-Am. He
posted a score of 19 which was weU
ahead of McAlester's Bruce Raybon
who scored a 26. Another Can-Am
rider who has gained respect for his
riding is Rick May who won the 250cc
A class. A class Woman rider Debbie
Hackler put in a good ride dropping
29 points while riding one loop.
