Hames, Arlf and Cannon fop Corona TT/HM By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA,JAN. 31 It was soo cold Saturday night that only the hardiest souls turned out at Corona Raceway for flat track action. What awaited them was one fantastic, fast half mile and another crack at t1ie TT instead of short track because of the heavy rain. Pete Hames, who is usualIrnot comfortable on the TT, set the pace in 250cc Money as he blasted off the line in first and went wire to wire. Spunky Roger Thompson, with the consent of the rest of the field, was off in second aboard his 125 with-Greg Nelson and Curtis Cannon in the third and fourth spots. Thompson held on to second for one more lap with Nelson and Cannon swapping spots. The third lap proved to be too much for Thompson's 125 and he was sidelined with a broken ring. Cannon locked in behind Hames and was there at the finish with Nelson third. Jim Rosa aboard a big Triumph was off on top in Open Money with Ron Arlt in second. On the third lap, Arlt made an outside pass down the front straightaway and it was alI over. Jeff Allison, scheduled to run for the dough, was side-lined after the heat with mechanical problems. Hames came back with an instant replay in the 250cc Money Half Mile and set a sizzling pace with clockings of 23.0, 23.02 and 23.13 on his way to the win. Off in second was Barry O'Brien with Curtis Cannon third, Terry Singleton founh and Mark Cain fifth. Nobody made any moves until the halfway mark when Cannon got by O'Brien to move to second and Cain got the inside line to drop Singleton to fifth. On the eighth lap, O'Brien went to fifth as the order of things changed again. Hames and Cannon maintained the top two spotS and Cain held firm in third as the checkered came out. Chris Cannon got the holeshot as the flag fell for the second time in the Open Money Half Mile with Bill Matherson second and Ron Arlt third. Jimmy Rosa had the lead the first time around, but had grabbed more than he could handle and ended up doing cartwheels through turns one and two. The second time around he was much more cautious and settled into founh until he could figure out the lay of the land. Cannon was really moving on his Rich Plueger-tuned .Yamaha and setting a pace that was going to be hard to match_ Matherson dogged him alI the way but was getting it from alI sides with Arlt looking for an opening. He found it on the eighth lap and went blowing by. It was a case of not having enough time to close the gap on Cannon and he had to settle for second with Matherson third. Terry Singleton held school in the 250cc Expen Half Mile going wire to wire for the win. Mark Cain and Barry O'Brien could do nothing more than folIow him home. In the Open Amateur/Class, Keith Guthery came a step closer to transferring to Expert as he picked up a double win. Ron Banels and father Bill folIowed him home on the TT and Bartels Sr. took second on the Half Mile with Gary Pettis third. Mike Bouvy came from third off the line to first by the second lap to take. the win in. the Open Novice Half Mile. Dan Lyyski, who already had the TT win to his credit, had the drop on the field at the start, but lost it to Bouvy and then Roben Little one lap later as the three of them pulled away from the rest of the field. At the finish they were still runninR in the same order. Brian Barrick was the only rider to pick up a double win as he bested Jason BeII and Brian Runyan in the 125cc Novice TT and Don Ambrose and Runyan on the Half Mile. Results TT 125 NOV: 1. Sun also rises af CMC Carlsbad By Rod Eschenburg CARLSBAD, CA,JAN. 25 Team Honda rider Chuck Sun stopped by Carlsbad for a "little practice" and scored an impressive four for four moto victory in the 250 and 500cc Pro classes. In all four motos Sun was out of the gate about a half a dozen places back of the leader, but every time at the checkered flag the "Rising Sun" was long gone out front and totally in command. Holeshot artist Lee Ramage (Yam) was the competition for Sun in the 500s and it looked for awhile that Ramage's big early lead in ·the first go 'round might hold up for a win, but in the late laps Sun just flat reeled him in for a long gone win. Likewise in the 2505, Honda·mounted Bryan Maloney took off for the big lead only to just flat get run down in the late laps by the. strong riding Sun.
