00 0') ~ 00 ing that the dry/slick conditions at Carlsbad were perfect for "practicing throllle control" and truly it was, only instead of practicing he was teachingl Overshadowed by Sun's performance was the excellent winning ride in the 125cc Pros by Yamaha· mounted Robbie Nolin. Nolin ran fifth overall with the 250s from a delayed start in both motos and displayed some very impressive passing techniques on the big· ger machinery. Two very fme fields of Intermediates went to the gate in the 250 and 125« classes with the 250cc class featuring lots of c101e riding and lots of lead changes. When the dust had settled, it was Yamaha-mounted Bob Caulfield winning in a tie- breaker over Scotty Arenz (Kaw). It was Caulfield's fmt win as an Intermediate and he really had to work for it as Arenz was likewise looking for that first big one too. The 125s featured a complete blitz of a strong field of riders by former mini star Ronnie Lechien with the Yamaha Support rider running 20-30 seconds ahead of second place in both motos. Second place was a good go, however, with four riders having a shot at it through both JDO(QI. At the checlr.ers in both go-'rounds it was Richard Hoffman (Yam) over Bobby Voorhees, and then Terry Murray. Murray had his finest day since moving out of .the minis as qe edged Voorhees for a tiebreaker third in the last lap of the second moto. Results 500 PAO: 1. Lewis returns, wins Old nmers MX' By Bob Alloy SUNNYMEAD, CA,JAN. 25 Today marked the return of Old Timer Blackie Lewis to motocross. Blackie took some time off to recover from a shoulder injury 32 but he is well mended now, and he is right back in there with the winners. Ed Mic;hetti, operator of DeAnza promoter and also an Old Timer MXer, saw to it that the track was well prepared and that there we.re a few added changes which always makes for excitement and an excellent day of motOCJ'OllSing. Since there were only eight races, everyone was able to leave the track early for a change. B1aclr.ie Lewis of the Masters division didn't do just the "let's get used to the track bit." No, he went hauling out there and grabbed both motos. Quite a comebaclr.. Master Dan Sanchez looked real good out there too, with his second place standings in both motos. Expert DicIr. Mosley was really geared up for perfection, taking firsts in both motos. Joe Bray and his beautiful new 1981 490 Maico seem to go together quite well as he quiclr.ly sped around the traclr. to piclr. up the second place honon in moto one. Bob Crandall really did lIOtDe moring to get to his third place win. The second moto's second place winner was George Spearing. Spearing knew just what to do on that banzai uphill and that double jump. Joe Bray was in there with a solid third place win. This gave him a second overall. Amat~ur John Said took command of the track by blasting right out there in·the lead in moto one. John held this action until lap six at which time Asker Lamlr.jaer took over. Asker continued his lead right up to the checkered for a first place win. Bob DeMiranda is still in that winning cycle and came up with a beautiful second place win. Said was in there for third and following Said was Larry Smith. Moto two was Said's from beginning to end as he flew around for 10 laps to take that prized first. Lamlr.jaer was the second place winner. Third place honors were earned by Smith and DeMiranda was in there for the fourth place win. Novice Bob Alloy lucked out and took the glorious first place win iii both motos. So he took home an especially nice fmt place trophy. Larry Escamilla was right in there for a second overall by taking the second place wins. Results MASTERS: 1. _ L.-IV....); 2. Don Senchez 1C-Al;3. Tam_IV...... EXPERTS: 1. Dick Maoiey IV....I; 2. Friesen, Swartz top DeAnza MX By Carol Campbell SUNNYMEAD, CA,JAN. 25 Blue skies, sunshine and excellent track conditions greeted almost 200 anxious riders at DeAnza Cycle Park. Track owner Doug Hall and race promoter Ed Michelli have seen to it that DeAnza's track has one or more changes each week, giving the riders new and different challenges to look forward to. As the gate dropped on the Open Pros, it was Suzuki of Riverside's Jon Friesen (C-A) pulling the holeshot over the rest of the pack. Jim Hoover (Yam) decided to give Friesen a run for his money as the two were handlebar to handlebar into the downhill turn and side by side over every jump. After seven grueling laps, it was Friesen who held onto the lead as Hoover, in an attempt to get around Friesen, ended up looping his machine. Bill Pelto (Hus) began to make his move on Friesen, but to no avail. It was Friesen taking the overall win over Pelto and Hoover. The first moto of the 125cc Intermediates found Scott Amy (Yam) leading Scott Marrs (Yam), Kirk Williams (Yam) and Ti Swartz (Yam). Amy had the lead well in hand, but it was Swartz who did an excellent job of riding as he maneuvered his machine from the back of the paclr. to finish only a bikelength behind Amy as the checkered flag came out. The shoe was on the other foot as the gate dropped on the second moto of the 125cc Intermediates as Swartz took the lead, but Amy was breathing down his neck. For five laps Amy chased Swartz. Suddenly, Amy made his move, taking the lead away from Swartz. It was Swartz now in hot pursuit. With throttle wide open and the white flag out it was Swartz again taking over the lead from Amy. Only a wheel separated tint and IeCODd place, but it was Swartz's front wheel coming across the fmish line first, giving him the overall win with a 2- I. Amy had to settle for second place honors with a 1-2 score and Scott Marrs rounded out the top three with a 4-3 finish. It was Cycle World rider Brian Griewe (Suz) atop his new '81 watercooled Suzuki, who pulled the holeshot over the rest of the 125cc Novices. The battle for second and third was hot and heavy between Matt Ailiey (Yam), Gary Harada (Kaw) and David Calvert (Kaw). It was Ailiey pulling out second place honors and Calvert finishing third overall, while Griewe took home the gold with his first baclr. to baclr. wins in his racing career. JAN. 23 The cold night air and threat of rain was not enough to discourage the enthusiastic riders who turned out for an excellent night of racing at Corona Raceway. With only a few weeks of high school racing left, the battle for the number one spot was on every rider's mind. It was Arlington's Steve Stewart (Yam) taking back to back wins in the Mini Senior Division, while Suzuki of Riverside-sponsored Moreno Valley completely dominated the IOOcc Novice class as Dino Gross (Kaw) guided his green machine across the checlr.ered flag for a pair of wins with teammates John Crary (Suz) and Eddie Mosely (Kaw) pulling out the second and third place points. The 500cc Senior class found Moreno Valley's Ken Campbell (Hon) pulling the holeshot over Arlington's David Villaneva (Kaw) and Fontana's Rob Kasch (Yam). It was Villaneva taking over the lead as Campbell slowed down to see his brake arm dragging on the ground, dropping him back to third. Villaneva figured the win was in the bag as he steered his big 420cc around the track, but suddenly, he found Campbell knocking at his back door. With only his front brake work- ing, Campbell continued to pressure Villaneva but to no avail. When it was an over, it was Villaneva taking the win for Arlington with Campbell finishing second for Moreno Valley and Fontana's Rob Kasch taking third place points. When all the points were tallied, it was Arlington coming out on top with Moreno Valley finishing in second. Fontana rounded out the top three. The unattached races had plenty of action as well. As the gate dropped on the 250cc Intermediates, it was Orange County Cycle rider Kevin Brooks (Yam) pulling the holeshot over Rick Vanderham (Yam), Ken Donovan (Hon) and Clark (Suz). completely Brooks and Vender dominated the race as they pulled away from the rest of the pack. The battle for third was hot and heavy between Donovan, Clark and George Wahrman (Yam). Suddenly, Donovan was down checking soil samples and Clark found, himself running in third with Wahrman breathing down his neck. Wahrman made his move on Clark, taking over third. Meanwhile, after not the best of starts. Ron Rehnquist (Yam) was strategically moving his way through the paclr., working his way up to fourth. Brooks continued to hold onto the lead as the white flag came out, but Vanderham was only half a bilr.elength away. As the leaders came into the last tum, Vanderham made a last ditch effort to pass Brooks, but instead, ended up going down in the allempt, but he still managed to hold onto second by pushing his bike across the finish line. The second moto found Vanderham out in front of Wahrman, BToob, Clark, Donovan and Rehnquist. Again, Rehnquist found himself off to a poor start and having to battle from mid paclr. and battle he did. By the third lap Rehnquist had moved from sixth to third. Donovan. who was running in second could feel the pressure from Rehnquist and by the fifth lap Rehnquist had sellied into the second place spot behind Vanderham. It was not in the caTds for Rehnquist to take the win as the checkered flag came out for Vanderham. It was Vanderham (Yam) taking up top honors with a 2-1 finish, Rehnquist (Yam) finished second overall with a 4-2 score and Brooks (Yam) settled for third with a score of 1-5. Le::..
