Welch brought his 490 Maico Mega 2 through the 117 mile course to a several minute lead at the finish. The race, which started about 50 miles northwest of Las Vegas and ended with a tour around the Apex molOCI'OlIII track, consisted of typical Nevada desert terrain: rocks, dust, rocks, hills, rocks, sandwashes, and of course, rocks. ~ When the Experts left the line at 10 a.m. it was not Welch but Anthony Pasqualotlo leading the charge. With early leads in both this race and January's Moapa to Vegas race, Anthony's getting to be known as something of a holesbot ace. Right on his tail were Kevin Welch and the comeback rider of the day, Leroy Kyger. Maico-mounted Jack Johnson caught a rock right at the start and was forced to retire with a broken fork_ Welch reeled in Pasqualotlo and sbonly after gas one caught and passed him when Pasqualotto momentarily lost track of the ribbon. Welch moved into the lead and stayed there to the checkered flag. In the 250cc class it was Kevin Steele with his second victory in as many races. Steele led the race with his Valley Cycle Yamaha YZ250 from stan to finish despite a bad get-off which ended up with the bike laying on his ankle. Steele remounted and managed to hold the lead in front of a hard charge by Husky-mounted Glen Wischmeyer. In the 125cc class winning seemed to be a matter of survival. The first casuaty was Jody Mader, who nearly destroyed his Yamaha with a giant crash within sight of the start.
