CA, NOV. 29 Saturday meant motocross at Sand Hill today and until further notice there will continue to be motocross each Saturday at Sand Hill Ranch. Riders are catching on and each week attendance increases. Today there were sufficient riders to make every class except Open Junior. but few enough to ensure ample riding time as well as an early trip home. The hillside track was in excellent shape and the 250cc Experts got the first chance on it. Jim Inglebright was on the first bike out. Doug McRae next in mota one, but the real duel for first was soon raging between Joey Schlag and Darrell Shultz. Each time Shultz got up close behind Schlag and ready to make his move, he stumbled one way or another giving Schlag a chance to stretch a little lead and Shultz would have to catch up again. Schlag was flying over fairly familiar ground and stayed in front all the way past the checkered flag. The second mota. however, was thoroughly dominated by Shultz who was in front aU the way. First place never seemed in any doubt as Shultz's powerful ride carried him many seconds ahead. Schlag was second, George McNamara third after pursuing Scott Rebuck most of the way. On the Open bikes, Shultz didn't seem to have much trouble putting both motos firmly away in first. McNamara was there for second and Mark Boggeri was in for third. Mike Preston was the 125cc Expert winner. He holeshot mota one and had a nice lead before he skidded and fell during the founh lap. Preston was up almost immediately, but not running again until four riders had gotten by him. It provided an excellent show· case for his skills. Minus a clutch lever, he needed most of the remaining time to successfully work his way past those four rid~rs to take the checkered flag fmt. lUck Ryan came up with Preston and held him off the longest to finish second. In moto two, it was Ryan who had the early lead and traded with Scott Rebuck for a shon stretch before Preston again took over for good. Ryan shadowed Preston most of the way for a repeat of his second place fmish. In the Junior classes, Mike Halliday clobbered the 125s with double holeshots and double wins. It was a mixed bag behind him with Doug Whaley and John Looney combining the best scores for second and third overall. Robbie Webster holeshot and won the first mota of the 250s, but in the second mota, Webster could not get past Craig Connelly who stayed in front from wire to wire. Novice Ray Searls had the lead over Junior rider Matt Arena for half of the combined Open mota. Arena was first at the finish with another Novice, Paul Montgomery, third. The Juniors did better in mota two, all finishing ahead f the Novices that time, with Mike , 'ythen leadinll' all the way. Some riders feel they did n't get a very fair shake from government in the '70s. Maybe that's because they didn't help elect. the government in the '70s.
