Manning masters
monsoonMX
By Dick Thompson
OLYMPIA, WA, NOV. 30
Several days of downpour made
for muddy conditions Sunday for
the 140 riders who braved the
inclement conditions. All things
considered, the course was in good
condition for race two of the AMA
Gold Digger motocross series at the
ThurslOn-Grays Harbor ORV Sports
Park. Even a crowd of spectators
hovered in the covered grandstands to
enjoy the show.
Jim Anderson and Rob Manning
put on an excellent show in the I25cc
Pro class. Anderson on a Yamaha
jumped to a quick lead in the .first
moto with Manning and Tom Moen in
hot pursuit. Despite Manning's efforts,
Anderson began to stretch out a large
lead which he held to the finish flag.
The second moto began the same
way until the third lap when Manning
slipped by Anderson who doesn't setde
for second and took the lead back
from Manning. But when the checkered
dropped, it was Manning, Anderson,
and Steve Corcoran.
In the 250cc Pros, Phil Larson was
plagued by mechanical problems all
day. Fast Phil jumped to a quick lead
in the fim moto, but it would only last
a few laps until chain problems struck.
Jon Jacobsen, riding for Paulsons on a
Suzuki, was quick to grab the lead
with Bill McLean right on his rear
fender. At the finish flag, it was
McLean, Jacobsen and Bob Buffaloe.
The second moto, it was Larson,
riding for Hi-Point and Yamaha,
around the first comer ahead of the
pack, but again only to last there a few
laps because of mechanical problems.
Doug Taylor on a KTM took the moto
and second overall, while McLean
combined a first and third for the
overall win.
In Open Pro, it was the veteran
Doug Raines who left no doubt by winning both motas hands down.

(Yam) of Eugene holds a slim lead over
Winston Rice who dominated the class
untiJ EIterberg came out of retiremeut.
Esterberg walked off with both motOl
and never looked baclt, IOtally
devastating the competition.
In a combined 125cc/Open Pro
race, Mitch Kirkpatriclt (Hus) pulled a
holeshot with his smaller conrades on
125s close behind. In the early going,
Richie Earle (LOP/Suzuki Sports
Center) pushed Kirkpatriclt until Jim
Wiant (Hon) and Rod Keller (Suz) of
Roseburg muclt by. Both Earle and
Kirkpatrick couldn't stay mounted
and the two National riders ended up
on the ground more than a few times
putting them both out of contention as
Wiant, on a borrowed Honda, and
Keller took their dice to the flax.
Second time out, Keller took the
lead with Earle and Wiant following
closely. Earle held onto Keller for two
laps until he took a northern Oregon
"soil sam~le" and let Wiant by. Wiant
worked his way past Keller and all of a
sudden, it seemed as though Keller's
water-cooled RM dropped off the
pace. Kirkpatrick's Husky was holding
off a stunned Earle, who still couldn't
believe he had 100t his positions
putti~ him near the back of the pack.
Taking the overall win as he did two
weeks ago was Wiant while Keller went
2-2 for second and a disappointed
Earle picked up the pace to gamer
third overall kepping him in
contention for top points staying tied
in the points with injured teammate
Clay "Crash" Light.
YoungJeff Daily (Yam of Springfield!
Yam) topped both matos in the Pee
Wee class which uses a smaller scaled
traclt. Second went to Ronnie
Shoemaker (Hon) as Jason Wood
(Yam) took his 5-5 tally for third.

McKenna was the fastest man of the
day, easily winning the Open Expert

Bill. Jamerson got by early 250cc
Expert leader Tom McKinney for that
win and Spoof Pena was the top 125cc
