No dish turns, going crosswise over the big jump and a lot of mileage added out back gave everyone a fresh go. There was certainly DO shortage of riders to try it out; 345 signed up. The thing in shortest supply was time to do it in. The wimer sun sets early and more time was lost when the pit patrolman painfully learned the wisdom of practicing what he preaches. Time did indeed run out. so those who didn't get a second molO got an automatic half rain check instead. Robbie Webster holeshot both motos of the 250cc Juniors and took home the third overall trophy after a lot of skirmishing. In the first molO, John Coulombe and Brian Magee followed Webster around the first turn, but Webster and Coulombe followed Magee across the finish line. In the second moto, Webster gave way 10 both Coulombe and Mike Lotten after the initial lap with Magee back in eighth place. By the time the white nag was nying, Magee had charged up imo third with Webster relegated to fourth. Lotten and Magee followed Coulombe much too closely imo a corner and when Coulombe stalled his engine, all three of them were in a jam. Coulombe managed to take off still in first place. but Wdlster grabbed second place and came around past the finish line in that position only to discover they were all on an extra notto· be·scored lap. In the 250cc Expert race, Dave Wood holeshot and hdd off both Allen Berluti and Dan Turner to finish first in the first moLO. In the second moto, Joey Schlag's KTM appeared to have an edge down the start, but Turner got around the turn first followed by Berluti. Schlag and Wood. That foursome got away from the others. but their order remained unchanged throughout. Bob Davis sprimed out in front for the first ~orner of the Open Experts. but Dave Wood slipped under him and came around in first, Davis second and Ron Combs third. Dave Coupe nearly lost it on the steep downhill but miraculously saved himself. Allen Berluti and Brian Jodry fared worse in the same stretch. Berluti DNF with a ruptured fork whileJodry struggled from last palce. Coupe, Jim Inglebright and Darrell Shultz were soon hot on Wood's trail. On the third lap. just at the moment Darrell should have made it past Wood for the lead, he fell instead and remounted in fourth. Catching Inglebright on lap four, Shultz proceeded 10 stall his engine in the crucial corner and had to settle for his fourth place. Wood kept well ahead of Coupe for the wi" In the second molO, Wood led Darrell ilt a full charge, but Wood bailed off during the final lap and Darrell came around the wlnner. Scott Yarbrough holeshot the lone I25cc Expert moto with Chris Ladd and Danny Chandler next. Chandler took over the lead wlth Bryan Wargo pursuing. chandler's lead continued to grow at a great rate. Leaping off the top of the steep downhill, Chandler table-topped his bike on every lap. Magoo is definitely still a wild man. Results 125 EX: 1. Dannv Chandler (Hanl; 2. Bryan W.go IPREI: 3. Mud ami motocross at Clarks Branch By Delbert Longbrake ROSEBURG, OR, NOV. 23 "The track will be real good if it doesn't rain." These famous last words were muttered by hopeful motocrossers as they looked over the Clarks Branch Motocross. But deep down inside. everyone knew it would rain, and "boy howdy" did it rilm. By the fint 250cc Pro moto, the track was all slop, but the smaU Pro class - three riden - gave the race all they had, Medford rider Ray Price pulled his new Maico in front of Tim Michlitch and Roy Davis off the start. Tim foUawed Price for three laps but ilt that time Davis had settled down a.nd was able to ~ Michlitch. Tun developed bike problems shortly after-' wards and pulled off the trilck. Everyone was watching Davis' progress closely as he tried to make up a I3-second deficit and soon he appeared to be moving up on Price. Roy was trying very hilrd, and at one point he got so out of shape on the giant downhiU that when he didn't crash, there were those who thought it WilS all done with miTTors. Davis' big chance to get around Price came in a left-hand downhill tum when Price missed a gear on his Mako ;md started sliding backwards in the goo. Davis fans were elated when it looked like he would flash by
