awesome power of the liquid-cooled
wonders: Jim Gibson, Donnie Hansen,
and the latest addition to mighty red,
Johnny O'Mara.
O'Mara soon proved his arrival in
the Honda camps was well deserved as
he quickly jetted into the lead of the
fint 250ct Pro moto with Gibson and
Hansen sandwiching Kawasaki rider
Robert Reisinger and Honda-mounted
Jim Tarantino to round out the top
five.
Gibson soon moved up to challenge
the rookie teamster for the lead but
O'Mara turned the dial a little higher
and put a five-second cushion between
himself and the battle for second.
Maico rider Ed Amet and Yamaha
pilot Steve Banning went head to head
for the nuber six slot with Amet
bailing off and letting Banning reach
the chec1l.en behind Tarantino in
fifth. O'Mara ·took the flag ahead of
Gibson, Hansen and Reisinger.
Johnny 0' set his sights on the lead
early in race two as Hansen moved into
second and Gibson brought up the
rear of the Honda trio. A few laps into
the mota and Hansen flew past
O'Mara on the tricky downhill jump.
O'Mara dove to the inside of the next
tum and inched into the lead, only to
slip back as Hansen had the hot line
through the next comer. On the left
hander bdore the finish, O'Mara
squared the tum and regained the
lead for good as Hansen drifted
further behind with each lap.
Gibson had faDen far behind the
dud for the lead but as the race
entered the final few minutes, Jumpin'
Jim grabbed a handful and reeled in
Hansen. On the final lap Hansen hdd
off Gibson's charge and fmished
second behind O'Mara. Hansen went
home with the second place share of
the Standard Crankshaft-sponsored
$1000 purse. Gibson finished third for
the day with Tarantino picking up
fourth and Reisinger fifth.

North on top again
at Corona
By Ron Lawson
CORONA, CA, DEC. 5
North High School was once
again on top of the Racing Association of Cycle Enthusiasts' high
school motocross at Corona Race-
52
way last Friday. They won by a strong
lead, but this time the battle for
second place was a close one, with
Hemet edging out Arlington by a scant
five point•.
North owed its win to the riders in
the small classes. In the Mini Novice
c.lass, North's Gary Dent (Yam) took
both moto wins over Arlington's David
Hollenkamp (Suz) and Poly's Erie
Streipeke (Kaw). The IOOcc classes
were dominated by North. The Novices
were topped by Arthur Duburte with a
Hemet man, Larry Hawkins (Suz),
sneaking into second place. North teammates Andy Castro (Yam) and Paul
Boyer (Yam) took third and fourth respectively. The Intermediates were
taken by Northite Tim Greenstreet
(Kaw) while Tony Martinez (Kaw) and
Eric Steil (Suz), also of North, followed.
The highest number of individual
wins went to third place Arlington.
Steve Stewart, Mark Decker (Yam).
Gary Clark (Suz) and Nate Rauba
(Suz) all took wins with Decker appearing at the top of two different classes.
Hemet topped them, however, with a
higher number of consistent placings.
Leading the Hemet team were Walt
Vanderlinden (Suz), Dale Dondel
(Yam) and Mitch Gabriel (Suz).
In the unattached classes, there was
no big news with Andy Northrup
(Hon) again slaughtering the 250cc
Pros. Jerry Black (Mai) was the runnerup this time with Craig Edwards
(Yam) following.
In the 125cc Pros there were some
new names [0 deal with. The first
moto was taken by Chris Wank and his
Mugen, a team that usually rides out
of Oklahoma. Craig Dale (Hon) won
the next mo[O and nailed second overall
behind Wanko Craig Cable (Yam)
[Ook a second and a third for thiTd
overall over Ryan Eide (Suz) and
another Oklahoman, Shan Niday
(Ka w ).
