Miller rockets at
Sprockets OT MX
By Bob Alloy
BAKERSFIELD, CA, NOV, 16
It has been about a year since us
Old Timers have raced at
Sprockets MX track in Bakersfleld. Our instructions read turn
off the 99 freeway at 24th Street in
Bakersfield. Guess what - yeah, there
was no 24th Street exit. So a few of us
spent most of the night trying to find
the track. Everyone should know just
look for the city dump and you'll find
the track. Anyway, once you get to
Sprockets yO\! are guaranteed a
challenging track and even more so
after a watering.
In the Masters division, it was Ron
Miller on a new Kawasaki winning
both motos. Ron adapted very quickly
to his new bike and for eight laps he
left all the competition behind. Ray
Sanchez and his four-stroke Yamaha
blasted in with second place.
Expert Carl Casanova was out there
leading the pack and for all seven laps
he looked great. Unfortunately, he
went down and Buzz Moeller passed
him and went on to win. Cal Browning,
nicely mending from a broken clavicle,
took second place. In the second moto,
Cal came on even srronger and put his
Can-Am into that winning gear and
won. That's really making up for lost
time. Buzz came in second.
'
Ron Clawson knew just what to do
on that rough, rocky track and he took
the win in both Amateur motos. Bob
De Miranda. despite a very discouraging start, quickly moved up through
the ranks to wrap up second place. He
also wrapped up a nice second in moto
number two.
Bob Smart in the Novice division
did all the right things and took home
the profit - a be!,utiful first-place
trophy for winning both motos. Bob
Alloy took second in both motos. Our
president, Larry Escamilla, took third
in the first moto.

having problems the first moto.
Anderson settled for second this moLO
and Diesso picked up another third.
Overall it was Anderson, Diesso and
Manning, as Larson didn't make the
start for moto two.
Larson left no doubt in anyone's
mind by winning borh 250cc Pro
motos. Anderson combined a fifth and
a second for second overall, while Gary
Kuest took third overall with a fourth
and a third. Even Mickey Fay put his
hot shoe away for a try at motocross
today.
In the Open Pros, Doug Raines with
all his years of experience couldn't Stop
Larson's streak. Fast Phil did it again
by winning both motos and Doug rode
a strong second both motos. Brian
Soderberg took a fourth and third to
third overall.
Remember, this is only the first race
of a six-race sereis; the next two dates
are November 30 and December 14.
From the looks of things, the
Thurston-Grays Harbor ORV Park is
the place to race this winter.

Juniors jam at CMC
Tumbleweed MX
look like a Can-Am sweep. Gregg and
Neil Hughan (Suz) hailed down third
and fourth positions as they tried to
keep pace wtih the leaders. Linder led
for the greatest part of the race until
Contente and Gregg both managed to
get by. leaving Linder to work his way
back. Soon. Contente was out of the
race leaving Gregg with the win.
Linder finished second with Hughan
finishing third.
The 125cc Junior race got underway with Pat Sparks (Suz) taking the
lead. Sean Broderick and Ronald
Quitoriane both were hot in Sparks'
tracks looking for a way by. Broderick
fell and Quitoriane took second with
John Seffing moving into third .. The
next lap saw bad luck for Sparks as he
went down, putting Quitoriane and
'Seffing in first and second. Lionel
Delaware soon moved into third where
he stayed for the remainder of the
race. QuiLOriane took first with Seffing
finishing second.
The second moto started with
Broderick pulling an early lead. Delaware and Sparks both pressed hard aL
Broderick's back fender. Broderick
was soon out of the running as he fell,.
leaving Delaware and Sparks to fight
for the lead. Se£fing worked through
the pack and soon took over third spot.
Seffing was quick to keep his fast pace
and soon passed Sparks for second.
Delaware continued leading and won
with Seffing and Sparks taking second
and third. When both motos were
added, Delaware had first. Seffing
second and Quitoriane third.

MX
By Dick Thompson
OLYMPIA, WA, NOV. 16
Two hundred riders showed up
at the Thurston-Grays Harbor
ORV Park for the first of a sixTace winter series. Riders not
only came from all over Washington,
but from Canada, Idaho and Oregon.
Despite the rain during the week, the
track and weather both proved
excellent.
The crowd watched motocross at its
finest as Phil Larson and Jim
Anderson set the track on fire.
Anderson took a quick lead in the first
moto of the 125cc Pros, but Larson
put on an excellent charge until
mechanical problems hindered him
and he settled for second with Danny
Diesso third.
SONOMA, CA, NOV. 16
LEMOORE, CA, NOV. 16
It was still dry and a little dusty
for round two of Winter Series
motocross racing at Golden State
Raceway, nee Sears Point, with
Lemoore's new lenghtened Tumbleweed Park MX track drew
many Junior riders to today's
CMC race, with Ray Linder taking the 250cc Junior win and Lionel
~Iaware pulling off lhe 125cc Junior
win.
The 250cc Junior class roosted off
the line with Ray Linder (C-A) pulling
the holeshoI. Wayne Hammid (Yam)
and Rodney Church (Suz) both held
on tight to Linder's rear wheel. Linder
began to put distance on the pack as
he put his Can-Am through dust that
had begun to stir. Soon, Brad Bryan
(!-Jon) started moving through the
pack and overtook Hammid for
second. Things began to stir when
Curtis Gregg also made his move
through lhe pack and took third.
These places remained the same for
the remainder of the race with Linder
taking first, Bryan second and Gregg
finishing third.
The second moto started with Linder
again pulling an early lead. David
Contente, also riding a Can-Am,
moved in close on Linder making it
Bryan Wargo beating out Dave
Wood's Yamaha for the 250cc Expert
win in a point tie while Wood holeshot
both Open motos and Danny "Magoo"
Chandler aced the 125cc Expert competition, winning the second moto by
nearly a minute.
Returning on the PCP/Hi-Point/
Moto-X Fox Yamaha, Wood holeshot
the first race of the day at just past 9
a.m. and was long gone for that 25minute race while Danny Turner,
George McNamara and Wargo chased
each other for second. Allen Berluti
and Randy Pockrandt closed up the
first moto bash to make it a six-man
race until the last few laps when Wood
completely left the scene. Turner held
on for second while Wargo dropped
McNamara's Yamaha of Petaluma to
fourth over Berluti and Pockrandt.
In the second round, Wood got
hung up for just a bit in the- backward
falling gate and it cost him his usual
holeshot. Wargo led every lap on his
Pacific Racing Yamaha with a fantastic
second place race going on behind.
Turner held second the first three laps
and then was displaced by Berluti with
Shawn McConn doing a great comefrom-behind effort. Shawn was deep
in the pack for the start. bUl moved to
seventh on the first lap and then fifth
and so on until he was running second
in front of Berluti, Turner and Wood.
Riding the Yamaha of Palo Alto,
McConn tried to gel away from this
crowd and set OUI for Wargo. but gOI a
sideways, drop-off crash inslead and
was out of contention fixing bars and
levers that dropped him LO a SiXlhplace fmish.
BerLuti returned 10 the second spot
over Wood and Turner putting lhe
overall into a tie with Wargo (3-1) and
Wood (1-3). Wargo gOI the win.
Turner LOok third with a 2-4 and
Berluti in fourth got some more Blue
Plate leading points over Jerome
Heiberger, fifth Wilh a 9-5 and only
riding one Champion MX Can-Am.
Doreen Payne had the first round of
combined OT/lOOs/PP all sewed up
with a wire-to-wire win overall, but
had a motor go away in the first turn
of round two which gave Gen~ HigginbOlham and Ernie "Coors" Cabral a
chance to dice things out withoul lhe
embarrassment of having a IS-yearold girl do 'em in.
It was a no-sweat affair in Open Expert with Dave Wood taking all the
marbles over Dave Coupe, Randy
Pockrandt and Brian Jodry. Wood
and Coupe had their own little thing
going way out front while the other
guys_ including Berluti, Jim Inglebrighl, Pockrandt and Jodry. only
sorted out places for lhe money in lhe
overall counts.
Danny Chandler had lillie trouble
winning both of lhe 125cc Expert
motos after five bikes were eliminated
in the first round of practice showing
just how tough this class is. Rick Ryan
and Al Silhanek were among those
who loaded up in practice with bike
problems.
George Holland brought out lhe
Suzuki R&D RM and led over half
the distance in front of Magoo.
Holland held greal lines until lhe
downhill, off-camber section past the
start line where 'Magoo" got underneath, made a pass stick, lhen went off
and hid. Holland stopped halfway
around the track and pushed it back,
departing with what appeared 10 be
suspension troubles.
Pete Langley led Scott Rebuck for
second and third until Langley
dropped from sight and that set the
stage for the overalls. The second
round saw Magoo win by 48 seconds
over Langley and Rod Smith all with
equal scores and overalls.
