Anaheim Amateur
Supercross
qualifiers
By Nanette Marie
VALENCIA, CA, NOV. 16
The California Racing Club
opened up its series of qualifiers
Sunday at Indian Dunes for the
1981 Anaheim Amateur Super-
10
cross race, and over 400 riders, including the Over The Hill Gang were on
hand to compete on the revised Shadow
Glen motocross circuit.
As the Open Pros headed into the
sandwash, International Yamaha/BG
Oils-sponsored Mark White took the
lead over Bob Schulz and Locey.
Locey quickly slipped past Schulz and
within a lap was right at White's rear
fender. The battle for the lead went
for six laps, White controlling the point
all the way. But the track was beginning to dry out and a riRht-hand sweeper berm was piling up with silty powder.
On his next pass, White went into the
corner full force. When White hit the
loose dirt, his YZ465 spun around like
a top, putting White to the ground instantly. White had plenty of time to
get remounted and charg;ng before
third place Bill Hagen could catch
him_ Will Harper and Rob Rollins
rounded out the top five, as Schulz
picked up a nat rear tire and cruised
across in eighth.
Round two was much easier for
Locey, as this time he outran White to
the first turn, and set up in the lead
with White close behind. White kept
Locey in his sights for the first half of
the race, but in the latter laps Locey
moved out to a comfortable marg;n.
Hagen moved past Schulz and Harper
for third by the halfway point, and at
the finish the top five were Locey,
White, Hagen, Schulz and Harper.
In the 125cc Pros, Steve Schmitz
grabbed the holeshot with Mark
Moscrop, Larry Baker, Jon Ortner and
John Drury all in there. Schmitz pulled
away in the first half of the moLO, as
Moscrop fought to hold off Baker and
Ornter. The biggest surprise was when
poor starter A.J. Whiting began picking off riders literally at will until he
set up Moscrop, who fell back into
fifth on lap three. After the halfway
lap, Whiting was in second and closing
rapidly on Schmitz. Whiting took full
advantage of lapped traffic to move
within a few feet of the leader. When
they came back into view in front of
the scoring tower, Whiting had command. From there Schmitz made a few
efforts to get by, then saved himself for
the next moLO. Baker, Ortner and
Drury rounded out the top five, with
Moscrop sixth.
Schmitz took the second moLO holeshot with Moscrop, David Lynch and
Matt Whiting behind, while A.J. Whiting, the older of the two brothers, was
right behind them in fifth. A.J. quickly
got by brother Matt, Lynch and Moscrop, then went after Schmitz. He
zapped Schmitz before the halfway
point, but Schmitz was not about to
g;ve up in this round, and stuck to
Whiting. The two ran neck and neck
right up to the last few laps, when, out
of the backsection, Schmitz appeared
all alone out in front. Whiting emerged
a few seconds later, apparently the
victim of a costly crash. When the
checkers new it was Schmitz in front
for the win and overall, trailed by A.J.
Whiting, Matt Whiting, Moscrop,
Lynch and Drury. Moscrop picked up
the third' overall money ahead of Matt
and Drury. as Baker DNF.
