TEN YEARS AGO The cover of the 47th issue of Cycle New: in 1970 featured a classic and a legend. The legend was J.N. Roberu, who won the classic, the San Gabriel Valley Motorcycle Club's Barstow to Vegas hare 'n' hound. Two thousand riders participated, wj"th J.N.'s 400 Husky getting to Las Vegas first. Steve Kirk was second on a Montesa, followed by Rich Thorwaldson (Ric), Tom Muto (Hus), Marty Dahlquist (Hus) , first 250cc rider Dick Camp (Bul) and first Open class rider Gene Smith (Tri). Wayne Garrett, Morris Norman and Wes Anderson. Jr. rounded out the top 10. Gene Cannady took first 125cc honors on a Sachs, while Hodaka·mounted Jack Morgan lopped the TraiLbike ranks. Suzuki's Joel Roben (ho hum) took another overall win in the Trans-AMA Series, doing the deed at the seasonender at Puyallup, WA. Husky's Gunnar Linstrom placed second with BSA teamsters. Jeff Smith, John Banks. Dave Nicoll and Keith Hickman following in the order. Sonny DeFeo (Cl) was next, and top American. Though Robert won more events than anyone else by far, the points system favored riders who placed every week. So Nicholl got the series championship and Dick Burleson placed fourth, highest Yank.
