TEN YEARS AGO o 00 C') The European motocross invasion of U.S. shores has long since gone away, but in 1970 there were enough visitors for three races a weekend. Inter-Am racing in Tulsa, OK, saw Husky's Arne Kring take the overall win, with teammate Christer Hammagren second after coming across the line arm in arm with Kring in the final moto. Montesa's Mike Runyard was top American. In another Inter-Am event in Atlanta, GA, Suzuki's Sylvain Geboen won the first two motos going away, but DNF the third round and the overall win was taken by Husky's Bengt Aberg, with Boh Grossi (Hus) as top American. The other international motocross series, the Trans-AMA, held a round in Delta, OH. A 370cc works Suzuki MXer was what World 250cc MX Champ Joel Robert used to beat first moto winner Dave Nicholl (BSA) in the second round for the overall win. . Brad Lackey (Cl) was top American at eighth overall. It was announced that effective Jan. I, 1971, the American Motorcycle ~ ciation would be the sole Federation Intemationale Motoeycliste affiliate in the U.S. The other affiliate, MICUS, had been handed a one-year suspension in the FIM's Fall COngress, reportedly because of a leadership struggle within the group. In the Anglo-American Gold Cup speedway series, the Anglo team took an 11-7 lead in the continuing series. The Anglo team was comprised of Barry Briggs, Jim Airey, Bert Harkins and Dave Gifford, and they competed against Americans Rick Woods, Steve Bast, Bill Cody and Sonny Nutter. Two riders whose careers would assume different paths were among those at a motocross event in Puyallup, WA. Randy Skiver (Mai) won the '500cc Senior winner, while Jim Pomeroy finished second to Gordy OCM in the 250cc Senior class. Scott Smith turned in a remarkable performance in Huntington Beach, CA, TT and flat track racing, as he won six main events and a trophy dash to boot. Rich Thorwaldaon took his RickmanMetisse to the overall win at the Shamrocks' 0-37 hare and hound, regaining the lead in the points chase for number one in the Heavyweight class. Frank RullO and Tom Muto finished 2-3, while Terry Clark won the Trailbike class. Bill Clementi took a pair of Huskies to Carlsbad for a CMC motocross, and came back with six moto wins and the 250cc and 500cc Expert laurels. In the quarter-litre event, the 2-3 finishers were Jim Wilson and Marty Tripes, both Cl-mounted. The Utah State Motocross Championships were held and titles awarded in four classes. The champs were Frank Myen (IOOcc), Warren Spencer (I25cc), Don Fuller (250cc) and Bob Brown (Open).
