Team Yamaha's Chuck Miller
may have been away from the
desert for awhile, but he hasn't
forgotten how to ride it. He took
the checkered at the 100'5 M.C. hare
and hound with- a slim lead and a big
smile.
It was Miller, and Dan Ashcraft in
the lead off the start. Ashcraft slid out
at the bomb, allowing Dan Smith to
get between him and Miller, but he
began moving again, catching the
duo.
Rick Schumaker was next with 158
falling in on the trail behind him. Cliff
Thomas, on his singing "C" machine,
followed them.
Gary Charters, first overall Senior
and on a 250cc instead of his usual C
machine, moved next into the parade,
followed by 127, Mark Zoller, Ken
Upp, Kent Pfeiffer (behind a pie
plate) and fust Vet Bill Saltzman.
Amateur Tim Sinclair, moving very
swiftly through the dust, piloted the
second overall C bike.
Heavyweights 128 and Verlin Van
Zee battled for position as they moved
along past the pink ribbon markers
with Senior Art Knapp moving up
through the ranks like the pro he is.
As the leaders led the way around
the first loop, Ashcraft kept moving up
into a more threatening position. Suddenly, however, his transmission decided to take a vacation, ending his
bid for the day's glory.
Miller had a nice lead into the pits.
Smith was next followed by Thomas,
Chuck Stearns, Schumaker, Charters,
127, Pfeiffer and Sinclair.
Miller now had a three minute lead,
but suddenly he realized that he had
lost the course.. Mter zig-zagging across
the area in an effort to pick it up
again, he caught sight of Smith's dust.
He watched it in hopes of catching it
and the trail again. Much to his disbelief, an also·lost Smith came out to
the same spot Miller had.
Final1y the trail was spotted with
Smith and Miller both streaking for it.
Smith reached it first with Miller
coming in close behind, hitting
Smith's rear tire and going down.
Now it was a catch-up game that
Miller had to play. He final1y moved
up and began to pass when he crashed
again. Mil1er couldn't believe it!
He got back on his machine and had
a strong talk with hitnself as he once
again chased Smith. When the two
riders final1y reached some rough
stuff, Miller took his time, made the
move, and was once again back in the
lead.
Meanwhile Stearns had moved up
into the third overall slot with
Schumaker in founh. Charters was
going crazy as he herded his big machine into the fifth slot.
Number 27 was still battling with
Van Zee, while Vet Richard Jackson
moved through the pack to eighth.
Pfeiffer and Howard McCasland
rounded out the top 10. McCasland
had bumped Sinclair into 11 tho
Three miles from the finish Schumaker's chain broke, abruptly e.nding
his fine ride.
Miller (250cc) took the checkered
with a minute's lead over Smith
(Open). Stearns (250cc), 250cc Senior
Charte-rs, and Vet Open Expert
Jackson were next. Pfeiffer (25Occ).

First Amateur overall was Sinclair
(C) in the l!lth slot, with Bill Mattox
(25Occ) and Kurt Pfeiffer (C) coming
in neck and neck for the second and
third overall Amateur spots.
First Trailbike, piloted by Pete
Andelman, finished just ahead of the
first overalI Novice, Jim Mattox
(25Occ).

Enduro

Kolbe Honda-sponsored Tom
Webb (C-A) edged out AA enduro riders Mike Godfrey (Hon)
and Bob Popiel (Hus) for the
overal1 victory at the Double Crossers
M.C. D·37 Claim Jumper Enduro.
Webb is a new editor at Dirt Bike
magazine and if he can write as wel1
as he can ride, the readers will benefit.
This year's enduro was renamed
after many years of being called the
Cal State 100. A new format featured
a very easy family first loop with family
classes, a harder second loop for the D·
37 C riders and then a tough third
loop for just the A and B D-37 riders.
The format was excellent and the
Double Crossers did an excellent job of
laying out an interesting enduro in
Lucerne Valley. What wasn't planned
on was an October heat wave which
drove the temperatures up to around
100 degrees. In the canyons and sand·
washes, the temperature was probably
10 degrees hotter with no wind, which
meant miserable riding conditions.
Webb dropped just four points on
his 400 Can-Am, Godfrey lost five and
Popiel was right behind with six down.
Webb was the only rider to zero check
F, smoking in at 59 seconds into his
minute! Popiel was riding a new 420
Husky Automatic and would have beat
Godfrey for second overall but for a
timekeeping error that put him a
minute late at checkJ which was at the
end of a slow nine mph section. Many
riders burned this check thinking there
could not be a check in a section with a
speed average of less than 12 mph but
they didn't know their rule book; there
could and there was.
D·37 number one 250cc rider Mike
Adams finished second in class but did
it with a slight handicap. Mike crashed
on the second loop and broke his leg!
Mike continued on in pain and even
had to have help in starting his Wheel·
smith Maico and was just edged out by
Randy Liebig (KTM) by one point fOl'
the class win. Mike lost a couple of
points in the third loop special test
when he dropped the bike and had
problems picking the bike back up due
to the broken leg. Mike's line down the
downhil1 into the finish was a bit spec·
tacular as he got off the trail and
almost ate it in some rocks. Later at
the hospital, the leg was too swol1en
to put a cast on and luckily there
wasn't any additional bone damage
done by riding on it. There was some
tissue damage but not serious.
First B overall was Jon Speight
(Yam) on a IT·175 YamahalJon rode
to a very fine 15th overal1 beating
many A riders, including the A 200cc
winner! Jon may well find himself an A
pretty soon.
The C riders only had to traverse
two loops and the second loop was chal·
lenging but it wasn't terribly tough.
Just a lot of tight terrain that wore you
out, especial1y in the heat. Again a
200cc class rider was the top rider with

Leon Livingston/Randy Hollenbeck charged 100° heat to claim
victory in The Notorious Dawg
three-hour team race. It was a
dog fight right off the line.
Craig Corda, Livingston and Mike
Stearns were going for check one when
Baja rider Mark Zoller swooped into
the lead by choosing a better line,
giving him about three seconds to
spare at home check. Livingston then
passed Zoner and slid by Corda for the
lead, which was short lived as he hit
some powder and flew over the ban.
He recovered quick enough to stay
ahead of Zoner but not to pass Corda
before home check.
Into the third lap partners took
over; Hollenbeck for Livingston, Dale
Stevenaon for Corda, Don Mathews for
Steams and Cris L' Allier for Zoller.
Hollenbeck got by Stevenaon in the
long, winding sand wash. Jim Nichols/
Charlie Welk got lousy starts as did Ed
Mundy/Bill Silverthorn. Zeller/L'Allier
siezed it, lOll a stinger and were sliding
to the rear fast but hanging on. (They
did fmish dead last but did eight of the
nine laps, receiving a thermos for their
effort.) Second overall was Corda/
Stevenson, third were Steams/Mathews..
